There are several, but a favorite scene comes to mind.

At the meeting in Rivendale between Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond, and Galadriel when they're discussing the Necromancer of Dol Guldur.. They are inside a gazebo pavilion structure having many expanses. Several extreme long shots show perspective volumes of multiple 3D layers simultaneously. Foreground, front gazebo architecture, subjects at variable distances around the conference table, the back of the structure displaying decorative elements, and then the view continues through arches with the spanning of distant mountains and sky, and there is no visible distortion!

i am amazed to hear the 3D is just as good as the theater presentation. Who needs 4K if you can make it look like it on blu ray

After checking out both the 2d and 3d (to be fair, I only checked out about an hour of the 2d while watching all of the 3d, but I think that was enough to determine which way was the best to watch this film), I definitely think the 3d version is the best way to experience this film. Its deceptively subtle 3d much of the time, but once you pop in the 2d and see how flat and lifeless it looks in comparison you realize how much the 3d adds to this film (IMO).

Thought the 3d in this was simply wonderful. Perfect depth throughout. I didnt encounter one single issue. Simply a stunner. Imo, this movie was how it should be, no gimmicky 3d B.S., but realistic depth that immerses the viewer in Middle Earth. Very well done, cant wait for Smaug.

“Need” is relative to the discretionary spending of the individual. The benefit of 4K for 3D home viewing enthusiasts is that it can allow for the comfort of passive 3D viewing, without the potential for seeing distracting visible line artifacts in some scenes if you sit closer, rather than further, from the screen…

Passive 3D will always be passive 3D and active 3D will always be active 3D. No matter by how much you increase the resolution, the disadvantages of each will remain.

4K for 1080P 3D passive home viewing is my only interest in the new model updates. That is what is relevant now for me and practical for 3D Blu-ray's. Can't wait for consumer affordable models to make their entrance. IMO, 4K media is not the priority.

I do not believe any manufacturer is looking to create Active 4k panels. All of the 4k and up 3D panels are either Passive or Glasses-Free. However, the Sony 4K projector is Active.

lol, Paul, I think you should have also bolded the words “my” and “me”...in the above ^.

Yeah, I kinda figured that but keep in mind that 4K media will help facilitate ‘the entrance of consumer affordable 4K models’….because no matter how good individual manufacturers’ upconversion engines are (and they can be pretty damn good) - the presence/availability of 4K media to be displayed on TVs with native 4K resolution will be an easier *sell* to the public.

Sometimes I get the impression from 3D aficionados that they think of 4K as an adversary when they should really consider it an ally to their cause….especially at the BAD time in the 3D evolutionary cycle.

BAD = Before Autostereoscopic Displays

P.S. at least practical ^ affordable ones.

I hope that they do. We have enough subpar technologies threatening to dominate the home entertainment market as is, I hope that's not another one.

I was a bit worried about this one because it raises a flag for me every time someone mentions "lack of gimmicky 3D". Usually the "gimmicks" are the fun part!

I instantly think the movie is going to have dull 3D that was done as a money grab for a movie you may as well watch in 2D.

I didn't feel that way about this movie at all! All the giant characters and fantasy environments came to life in 3D and there were several times I was ducking out of the way of arrows shot toward the screen! Panning shots added to the dimensionality, and it was generally pretty great.

It's not my favorite 3D ever, but probably top 3 for the year.

What do you understand would be "subpar" about 4K passive 3D displays in relation to existing Full HD 1080P Active 3D Displays?
Blu-ray 3Ds should display at their Full HD 1080P resolution, same as todays active displays, eliminating todays passive half-image interlace separation artifacts, and the viewing distance comparable to todays 1080P active technology without flicker.?

But they want 4K 3D Nothing is ever good enough for whiny people. I still bet many will be jealous when I have a 4K set, and they do not. But, back on the subject at hand. The Hobbit looked great. I loved the 3D. Movie made me remember what I loved about the rings trilogy!

I find Avatar just that little bit long. And active will put me to sleep at two hours plus. Sucks for me. So I'm gonna watch this in 2D first, pick my favourite scenes and watch them in 3D. If I ever own a passive display, and I wind up liking this, I'd probably sit through it in 3D. And hopefully I can make it to the cinema next time, in 3D and HFR!

Finally watched this on my 150" and have to say this is one of the best 3d I have seen. The 3d in this so very different compared every other movie in that it felt very natural to the point that I forgot I am sitting in my room and felt as if I was overseeing a real life performance. The natural beauty and endless panaromas in every scene gave it a very different perception. The eagle scene is the highlight for me. As far as the story goes this is more entertaining than lord of rings for me, and I kept wondering how much more epic LOTR would be in 3d. $15 for 3 hrs of insane in is not bad at all!
