Is i7-930 and x58 still worth it?

You will want to use the Intel SATA II port as it is more reliable and has been random performance

Thanks again for the input. It makes me feel a bit better about it if we can find a price that works for us both. Nice to hear from someone who had experience with both sockets and SATA types.
