C'mon guys, let him enjoy Seven Samurai. Don't try and persuade him to dump hundreds of dollars on other Criterion titles right off the bat!

Always enjoyed Monsieur Verdoux but the humor in it is rather dark so I can see how it might not be to everyone's taste

Some of the posters in this thread have financial parts in the Criterion business me think

Seven Samurai...

You'll read a lot of glowing reviews and critical acclaim about how this is a monumental work of cinema that has influenced countless movies since, and about how the cinematography, themes, and talented cast function together with a masterpiece as the final result.

Don't let any of that scare you off, though. Seven Samurai is worth buying simply because it's just a good old fun movie that flies by so fast, despite the film's length. Just dive in and enjoy.

I'm opening a Barnes & Noble email right now that advertises an Easter sale for 40% off any kids movie on DVD or Blu-ray.

My first thought was to wonder if I could convince them that Videodrome and In the Realm of the Senses are kids movies.

I'll let this coupon pass me by, but it would make for a memorable store visit.

I've said it before, and I'll taking my lashings for it again, but I have a really hard time sitting through "For All Mankind"

As far as B&N kids movies go, my kids LOVE Modern Times!

I used to like watching Charlie Chaplin scenes when I was a kid. I mean, I still like them, but I related to them just as well during childhood.

The Criterion DVD of Forbidden Games is a kids movie. Well... Yeah. I guess.

Criterion's DigiPacks are a lot classier than cheap plastic cases.

Not a favorite but I am not a big fan of Leigh so that does not help. Story is a bit similar in feel with An Affair To Remember which I find does a better job but it's a personal thing. Still if you enjoy these old style romance it's worth seeing it

I was browsing through a used place during lunch break and saw a mint condition copy of the Monsoon Wedding Criterion Blu-ray for $15.

This particular movie did not seem like my personal can of worms when I gave it a cursory look to the summary and booklet, so I passed it by. It's good to know that occasional Criterion flicks show up on this particular used rack, though. Maybe I'll get really lucky one day and see Pierrot Le Fou or The Third Man.

Go for it! It's a good film---and it's very interesting to see the take on the subject matter, for the time.

Have you not liked/seen their other similar family dramas, like the Secret of the Grain?

Just my 2 cents: Secret of the Grain is the better film. I think it's a must.

Agree with you on that Pat...it is a "dark" film and one that I think improves with further viewings. The other of his later films that I enjoyed was Limelight. I always thought it was neat to see Buster show up.

I'm enjoying the BFI Chaplin at Keystone set...you might want to consider it.

I've never seen The Secret of the Grain, although I've heard good things about it.

I guess that, when I looked at the case and booklet yesterday, Monsoon Wedding struck me as being similar to Rachel Getting Married, a 2008 Jonathan Demme movie starring Anne Hathaway.

There are two weddings that matter to us guys, our own wedding and our daughter's wedding. All other weddings are just intrusions into our lives. When I was watching Rachel Getting Married at the theater years ago, I kept thinking, "When is this wedding ever going to end?", and it was sort of like being stuck at someone's real-life wedding. (I guess that was the intent, but still...)

My quick assessment of Monsoon Wedding may be completely off base, and it might not be anything like Rachel Getting Married, but that was my general impression.

P.S.: I'm being slightly tongue-in-cheek in the third paragraph, because I've been a groomsman at several friends' weddings and had a blast each time. You know what I mean, though. Sitting through some weddings is just a task. I wanted to push the fast-forward button during Rachel Getting Married, just as I've wanted to push the fast-forward button through certain real weddings.

P.S. Part II: Incidentally, I felt the same way about Lars von Trier's Melancholia. Get the wedding over with already. At least there were some cool arguments and mass-scale havoc involved in that particular instance, though.

It's very diferent than that film. It's much more of a comedy/drama and nowhere near as serious. Also, unlike that film...you barely see much of a wedding at all...it's everything leading up to a wedding that makes up the film. In addition, don't forget--it's a completely different culture and the way they handle these events are interesting to see.

I'd write a better response but I'm on my phone so I just went for the quick reply

Edit: By the way, I'm not recommending it...if it doesn't appeal, it doesn't appeal...and I don't consider it great either. I just wanted to expand on it a bit to give an idea of what it's more like
