No, I must have missed it if you'd mentioned it before, I was legitimately asking...didn't mean to offend you or anything.

Oh no, you didn't offend me. I just wasn't sure if you were kidding or not lol.

Those three are probably the ones I found to be the most boring. There are a few other films I didn't like mainly due to subject matter, but those can be argued.

Not trying to be rude, but have you ever taken a film history class? It really gives you a better appreciation of film. You would probably enjoy 8 1/2 and other Criterion releases even more.

You might want to read the posts closer if you are going to be calling someone out - He actually called F&L one of his LEAST favourite.

Unfortunately no. I was looking into film classes at my college and they were mostly aimed at directing but no history or analysis per say.

There are a handful of Criterion titles that I've found to be boring. Akira Kurosawa's The Lower Depths and Dodes'ka-den both come to mind. Nicholas Roeg's Bad Timing did not quicken my pulse, although I should give that one another chance someday. For some reason, I did not gush over Kubrick's Paths of Glory when I first saw the film. Richard Linklater's Slacker had me looking at my watch.

After going through the overall presentations of each Criterion package, I can understand each film's significance in cinema history, and I can understand why these films are acclaimed as underrated masterpieces by some, but they just do not merit frequent rotation under my roof.

Some may view these films differently, though. Arguing with another Criterion fan about the merits of a particular film is sort of like mud-wrestling with a pig. After a while, you realize that the pig is enjoying it.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I never said that the movies were bad, they just do not do it for me.

Each person put a lot of work into each film and I appreciate them for that. However, overall the film did not do anything for me.

It seems like whenever I give a negative opinion on a film, I'm the bad guy. I don't get it.

For anyone with Netflix Instant who hasn't seen Kurosawa's Ran, you should watch it before Saturday. Seriously, with Harold and Maude, the Larry Sanders Show, and Peep Show, these Netflix expirations are getting out of hand .

Shock Corridor wasn't grabbing me last week, and since no one stood up to defend it, I have to assume it's not that well loved here?

I know this post wasn't directed at me, but if you don't mind another thought ... I haven't taken any film classes, but have loved most of the Criterion releases I've bought. I can appreciate a film that I might not "get" so much better after learning more about the film through any particular Criterion bluray's supplements. Case in point for me is The Red Shoes. I'm maybe halfway through the supplements ... still have to go through the audio-commentary. It really does help a person appreciate the film when you understand its history better ... from why particular actors were used, to the time period that the film was made, to the film's restoration ... so so much more! I find it more work to go through the supplements than to watch the actual movie though. I'm not sure why. I think it might be a time-related thing ... finding the available time to take it all in without letting too much time go by between viewings.

it felt like it dragged on to me but after watching it a second time I gained a respect for it. It's really a well made film.

I would rather spend two-and-a-half hours in actual traffic than watch the movie again.

I much preferred The Naked Kiss to Shock Corridor. Shock Corridor was very unique, though.

If you want to see a man lose his grip on reality while researching a murder surrounding an insane asylum, then you will certainly be in for a treat.

Been there done that here in Atlanta. I think that I'll choose most any movie over traffic.

Amen to that. It was good to revisit Sharky's Machine in any format, but that particular DVD transfer was rough for wear.

I love Shock Corridor. If Fuller's mix of satire doesn't strike you as genius the next go around, I don't know what to say. I prefer this issue movie than the other big "issue movie" of the early sixties: To Kill a Mockingbird. Sure, the Naked Kiss is easier to like, but I think Shock Corridor is effient and exacting on its targets. Nothing says it better than the black clansman. Now that's institutionalization.

Agreed. Ran is a great film. I've yet to see my StudioCanal copy though. I imagine its much better than the DVD I borrowed from the library.

Stumbled across this 20 page piece on Salo and "sick cinema" when googling Rosenbaum+Salo. Gonna read it later.

NYMPHOS!!

Greatest. Movie. Line. Ever. God, I love Sam Fuller.

Yes, it gets some love. You missed a few pages of posts on Fuller about a month ago. Shock Corridor is brilliantly wicked social critique and satire.

Preach it! It really takes down a big number of targets: the Army, mental institutions, greed & racism. It was so ahead of its time. Its mindboggling that a film like Crash came out 40 full years later. In a way, Shock Corridor is like every socially conscious film Paul Haggis has ever directed rolled into one, except you know, good.

You're being overly sensitive. Your immediate defensive responses and your comment here make you seem easily offended. It's just the internet. Nobody knows nobody. Also, writing the words "INCREDIBLY boring" with the all caps emphasis for a movie as wonderful as People on Sunday is bound to generate some questioning challenges. That doesn't mean anyone is making you out to be a bad guy.
