DavidGQ, Thanks for the news on the 3D glasses special from Cinemark.
If GI Joe Retaliation's 3D lives up to the 4 minute special trailer and other 3D trailers, it's going to be the conversion of the year IMO, standing alongside the strong 3D of Titanic. Two days to go. Thanks also for posting the 3D trailer Srinivas1015. |

Just came back from the private screening and....
The movie is really good, so much better than the first. As for 3D, traffics were bad so I sat in the front row which is not good at all for 3D viewing so I can't give you a feedback on that. But there are few really good 3D scenes without going into any spoilers. So yeah, go see it this weekend if you guys can. |

Channing Tatum, from the first GI Joe, is in the first 10% of the movie. The movie's star is The Rock, followed by Storm Shadow and Ray Park's Snake Eyes. Bruce Willis only plays a few scenes sadly.
3D: Strong in most shots. Some medium 3D but no weak 3D. ![]() The 3D in GI Joe Retaliation lived up to my high expectations. Strong throughout and one of the best 3D Conversions I've seen in cinema. Awesome job. Every shot looked great in 3D, with plenty of distance between the 3D layers, and nice 3D sculpting on the faces. Barely caught the slightest sign of minor warping (around the edge of a 3D layer character) in two quick shots in the whole movie. Credits included Digital Domain. ILM for the 2D effects. Story was interesting, great action. The scene that stole the show IMO was the Snake Eyes mountain assault. The action and 3D were amazing. ![]() Previews in 3D: Star Trek Into Darkness: Great 3D World War Z: Great 3D. They still haven't showed a single zombie's face yet. I wouldn't even know this was a zombie movie if I didn't know about the book. WOLVERINE 3D: Great 3D. This looks cool. ... and a couple others I've seen before. Seems 3D conversion technology has advanced significantly in the past year. |

How did you like the Snake Eyes scene on the mountains? Lots of pop outs that made me flinch back, and the 3D layers were super strong. Lady Jaye was a highlight of the movie also. I was glad Cobra Commander [Show spoiler]

![]() As far as GI Joe's 3D? Strong 3D. Not a quick, tacked on, weak 3D cash in. |

![]() In fact, converting a movie instead of using 3D rigs has a few advantages too. For one, the offset of light reflected into the two cameras isn't a concern. You see this phenomenon in quite a few native titles where the reflected light off of objects looks a little 'off'/weird/appears to be on two different depth planes as a result of each camera in the rig capturing reflected light from a slightly different angle and then both images imposed on one another. I noticed this a lot in Dredd and Resident Evil Afterlife. I can't remember the other titles. Converting also offers a lot of freedom. Once a native title is shot, the inter-axial distance between the two cameras in the rig is final and no amount of post production work can adjust the degree of spatial dimension. It's much easier for the DP to light the sets too. Not to mention giving the director and cameraman to do the camerawork without being restricted by the bulky rigs. With all these benefits and a final product that looks as good as a native title, I can see why many filmmakers opt to take the conversion route. It's not an afterthought as most directors and storyboard artists frame and do the camerawork with 3D in mind. Parallel Rigs, Fusion Rigs or Conversions - All are effective ways to get a good three dimensional image. (Parallel rigs are in fact slightly inferior as the degree of how close you can get the interaxial distance between the cameras, especially for close ups, is quite limited due to the nature of the setup.) |
