DVI actually, and it still upscales regualr dvds better. The Transformers DVD is a key example. The movie is less gritty on the PC than when I watch in a standard dvd player or my PS3.

My PS3 is connect with HDMI.

Is your HTPC connected to the same screen as the PS3, or are using a smaller monitor with your HTPC? Because, technically, if that's the case, a computer monitor is a much smaller image where the flaws wouldn't show up because the image is small. DVDs, without being upscaled, are designed to look pretty good on screens upwards toward 27". Upscale them on anything less and they will look a hell of a lot better than any upscaled image on a 46" screen.

Not sure what you are refering to exactly.

well, the picture settings (brightness,contrast,sharpness...etc) could be different for each source...so you would need to adjust each accordingly. Do you connect both devices into the same input?

I for one don't really care for upconverted dvd's because its really just artificial enhancement...but I think the PS3 does do a good job of displaying a great dvd picture, which is why I think your settings might need some tweeking.

Are you using the same display? If not, maybe display differences are what you're seeing: small display versus large display (flaws will be more obvious on a large display), TV settings vs monitor settings (maybe the TV has the sharpness cranked or is using some other TV setting that is making things look worse), etc. If you're using the same display, make sure the settings are the same for each input (mine allows different settings for each input and if that's the case with yours, make sure you have things setup the same way). Also, what is the PS3 scaling option set to?

Anyway, it's possible the software on the PC has a better upscaler but without Transformers actually being in hi-def, it's hard for me to imagine an upscaled Transformers looking any better than it does on the PS3. Enough of a difference to be noticeable anyway (unless maybe you have a really large display making it easier to see differences). I was playing around with that a while back comparing Transformers upscaled on a PS3, an HD-A20 and a Samsung DVD upscaler. Transformers was the title I picked as an example of a DVD looking great upscaled (and while not really relevant here, I used one of the discs in early seasons of SG-1 as an example of a DVD that doesn't look very good upscaled). I thought the image on the PS3 and HD-A20 were very HD-like (it looked great). I did notice some differences with the Samsung but that's probably b/c it wasn't quite as good. Meaning, if the Samsung had better a little better than the PS3 or HD-A20, I doubt I would have been able to notice it (i.e. hard to imagine upscaling being able to provide anything better, at least enough to be noticeable when viewing a movie instead of using a calibration disc or whatever). Of course, without seeing something that does a better job of it, I won't know for sure. But, my point is, the upscaled image on the PS3 and HD-A20 looked so good, I figured the only way it could be noticeably better, was to use the actual hi-def version.

I think the PS3 does a good job with upscaling DVDs. My PS3s performance is comparable to the detail from the upscaled picture from my Yamaha DVD-S2500. That's not bad considering the Yamaha has a Faroudja DCDi chip and now retails for $749, down from $999.

You are probably receiving more image detail with the PS3 upscaling than you are with your HDPC.

People always talk about up-scaling as if it’s the answer to SD video playback. It’s part of the answer, but not the most important element. SD video is interlaced, and interlaced to progressive conversion (de-interlacing) is more difficult and more important to get right. Any errors at the early stage are generally exagerated, rather than concealed, later in the replay chain. There’s an exception to this, but it’s not exactly mainstream.

These days, DVD & BD players, PCs and the PS3 all perform de-interlacing of SD video from DVDs, and they are not equal. Most BD players are not very good at this. The PS3 is better, but not as good as the best DVD, HD DVD & PC playback. This is quantifiable, objective, and quite well documented; it’s not just subjective and anecdotal. The PS3 was poor when it was released, but was improved a while ago. However, if you read Kris Deering’s recent comments, it sounds like it still has some way to go.

Since DVD playback is hardly a stretch or a priority for the PS3, I would expect that to change as further releases become available, so current performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. I don’t think there are many good reasons why the PS3 should have to be good with DVDs, but in my experience, PC solutions have become very powerful and well-developed (for video at least) and can improve on stand-alones. Much of the benefit comes from codec and compression noise-reduction, and effective anti-aliasing processing that can recover clean, sharp lines. I’m sure the PS3 will be able to achieve this in due course.
