The Starkweather documentary is not all that, but it is pretty informative with respect to the events that inspired the film.
Sissy Spacek is probably the main reason I'll be buying Badlands.

Season 5 dropped off a bit at the end and had what was definitely the worst-written Mad Men finale yet, but it did have a run of about 4 episodes in the middle which was possibly its best run yet. Season 4 was the best for me, I'm surprised people said it dropped off at that point, since Season 3 had
[Show spoiler]that awful storyline with the schoolteacher
for one thing.

Sadly, I have not seen any of the other Bresson films. I plan to pick them off one by one as they are released on Blu-ray in the future. (Hopefully released on Blu-ray, that is.)
Good point about the sound editing. I highly recommend Pickpocket, if you decide to view another Bresson before a blu ray release. All the films I have seen from him are great.

Criterion really would've knocked it out of the park had they interviewed Schuyler Fisk. Without Badlands she may not exist. Plus, Malick is her godfather.

Gate Of Hell, Le Doulos, and Naked Lunch are in!

I'm going to another Green Day concert tonight so I'll watch Naked Lunch later tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah I saw that there's two versions. I really like the artists. I think one time I passed by the Jimi Hendrix live at Monterey festival blu ray for like 22 bucks but didn't buy it. Maybe it was destiny.

Have fun! Some friends and I got lawn tickets to the Depeche Mode show here in Atlanta in September, so I can't wait.

Let us know what you think about Le Doulos. That's one cool flick, even by Melville standards. Le Doulos and Le Deuxičme Souffle are such a great pair of Criterion DVDs, and, if they are upgraded to Blu-ray someday, I hope that Criterion keeps the same cover art for both.

[Show spoiler]the Hare Krishna thing seemed a bit anecdotal and was given too much airtime, the whole Lane story with the money felt completely shoehorned in and I didn't really feel anything when he went even though I really liked his character, and my biggest problem with the season was that they seemed to forget that in The Suitcase they made Peggy Don's surrogate mother, they shared a genuine human connection that Don hadn't received since Dick's wife, yet he spent season 5 acting the same way he did towards her in the first seasons. One of the only things I can credit to season 5 was that they didn't have Don sleep with Joan
. However I'm still interested enough in season 6.
I also thought much it was not only out of place, but leading nowhere half the time...just slow moments bookended with explosive ones that came out of nowhere. I know what you mean there.

..and it's hard to argue about that episode..easily the best episode of the series and one of the overall best of recent years.

Isn't that "The Phantom"? Jim Emerson wrote an interesting analysis on his blog at the Chicago Sun-Times site. I think the dramatic heights of the episode(s) immediately prior have more to do with the poor reception of season 5's finale, rather than any problem with the writing itself.

It's really cool hearing how much Sheen genuinely appreciated being given the chance to do Badlands.
I've only watched the Making Badlands feature and I thought it was decent. I kind of wish they had gone with a few more supplements, considering how extravagant The Thin Red Line's release was.

I'm curious if Criterion has tried to get Lanton Mills as a supplement for any of their Malick releases. That would be incredible.

The Suitcase might be the greatest episode of any television show I've ever watched. I've been meaning to do a rewatch, but I'm far too caught up in going through Veronica Mars again, what with the recent Kickstarter/film news.

Malick gave Lanton Mills to AFI. If you're an AFI student or alum you can view it in their LA library. Otherwise, no dice.

My copy of Naked Lunch shipped today from Amazon after it was supposed to arrive today. Probably the first time I've experienced Amazon being late on release day delivery. Oh well. Can't wait to watch it this weekend!

Right now I believe they are going through a Max Ophuls marathon, which I endorse 100%. Lola Montes (sorry Pauline Kael), Letter from an Unknown Woman and Earrings of Madame De are all divine.
Going through the Lean set myself now. Got a chuckle out of the the opening of In Which We Serve. Credits are all about Coward: staring Noel Coward, written by Noel Coward, art director for Noel Coward, Noel Coward’s music performed by…, and finally directed by Noel Coward @ first billing over David Lean. Then the film goes on to a long, beautiful, Eisenstein-ish montage that makes dialog and acting unnecessary. I can imagine editor Lean snickering in the cutting room.

But Lola Montes is a hard go for me. In fact, it might be my least-favorite Criterion. I found myself checking the player to see how much time was left in it, and the only other film I can remember doing that in was whatever Twilight movie had that godawful wedding in it. What am I missing in Lola? Is there something meta- that I didn't pick up on?

Just watched Gate of Hell for the first time and have to say I was blown away. Sometimes simplicity is the best way to do things. Most directors of today should start thinking about that. The final 15 minutes was almost unbearably suspenseful. Wish Criterion would have given it some extras but the film alone was worth the cost. Will be revisiting this often.

I would love to own the 20 minute film The House is Black. It's every bit as powerful as La Jetee and Night & Fog. It's a shame so few people know about it.
