I know I already stated my opinion, but I'm going to voice Play.com again. It looks nice, has space for a signature, and you as the owner are swaying toward it as well.

Additionally, you probably won't sell whatever you get signed if you're a big fan of Iron Man/RDJ, so getting the Play.com version signed allows for the FutureShop version to be sold at your leisure while still keeping the signed Steelbook in your personal collection.

The note about embossing makes a lot of sense too. Embossing would make it a big PITA to sign something.

I'd say to disregard what the value of your steelbook would be worth with the signature. You're not going to get a certificate of authenticity with it and if you did get it signed, I'm sure there's no way in hell you'd sell it anyhow (#2 on your list remember). I think your gut is telling you Play.com. Guts are seldom wrong...I know mine wasn't last night after that vindaloo!
They're worth Sweet FA mate. There are a ton of ways to authenticate an autograph, BUT a COA is NOT one of them. They're just pieces of paper printed by dealers. ANYONE can print them. There are a few basics to remember, but that makes for a whole new topic.

On a percentage scale, what are his chances of getting the signature? Where will he be in relation to RDJ? If his chances are high go for it, take the risk. If his chances are less than 50% give him the Play.com.

Did you get April's Empire Magazine? My sister grabbed me the shelf copy and I also have the subscriber exclusive. Need to get it framed!

The obvious one would be to get as close to where his car will stop OR near the door. If you're lucky anyhwere at the front of the crowd from where the car stops leading to the door. With something a small as a blu-ray case you'll need to fight your way to the front and stick it under his nose.

The good news is that Robert Downey Jr does stop and sign.

I'm not 100% on this one with 'RDJ', but some actors HATE merchants (dealers). IF he gets a sniff that your mate is holding a camera to take a photo of him signing the box you're screwed. He may very well think he's a dealer and there will be no time for him to explain and different.

There was a Rolling Stone one too? I canceled my subscription to that because I never had time to read it.

Default Wrapper or no Wrapper??

Where do you guys stand on leaving the wrapper on?

Technically, if he signs the steelbook still in the wrapper...he is only really signing the wrapper.

I've seen alot of famous people take LP's out of the wrapper before signing one at an intimate autograph signing. I see it all the time at Chiller Theater.

It is something to think about because they break down over time and if he signs the wrapper and something happens that removes the wrapper then you brick your steelbook AND your signature.

Not necessarily. In this day and age, EVERYONE wants a coa. You'd be devaluing a high priced item...

I've got 50 'Apocalypse Now' posters signed by Marlon Brando for sale. Every one comes with a COA.

EAAAASY money!

It's all a gamble, but to me it's a no-brainer as the personal reward of having the FS Iron Man signed by Downey Jr. trumps any possible loss in my eyes.

And, I'm strictly talking about this from a collector viewpoint and not a reseller viewpoint. My intentions would be to never let that thing go should it occur. Even if someone offered $10,000 cash it would remain my cherished piece!

I have boxed up the steelbook that won the public vote. And its FS that has taken the crown. So I guess a few nervous days ahead. And keep my fingers crossed my mate pulls it off. :s.

Best of luck to ya. And, just make certain your friend understands (as I'm sure he already does because of your incessant reminders so far) how valuable this item is to you.

You chose... wisely.

It's be fine. And don't fret or obsess over it - I'm sure your mate knows the score. You must post piccies when you get it back!

I believe there are other ways of getting an autograph authenticated.
