So two weeks ago, I heard about blu ray steelbooks for the first time (yep, been living on Mars).
Rushed out to Future Shop and was super stoked to find copies of Die Hard 1 and 2 in steelbook for for $5 each. Stumbled across this forum and was excited to see if anyone could help me find the last two movies. Little did I know I had bought dvds...(boourns). Went out that night and grabbed the Departed. This time I made sure it was a blu ray. That was two short weeks ago. All I think about is steelbooks. Today I got these in the mail: ![]() And in two short weeks, I've assembled a small collection: ![]() Still waiting on The Hurt Locker, Batman begins, The Dark Knight and both Star Wars steels...think I'm going to need an intervention... |

If you don't want to become a serious blu-ray SteelBook collector, I don't recommend you go over to Hi Def Ninja . com and check out their SteelBook forums
![]() They really do have some good SteelBook info and insider tracks on releases. Being a blu-ray.com member for more time, I can see that a lot of our info is gathered from that site. I do love the community here more, but their SteelBook info is top-notch. ![]() |

Oh boy, you are going to go down a long road of obsession
![]() You should check out Zavvi.com, I believe they picked up what Play.com was liquidating. Could get a nice haul at a good price. Also, if you are interested in getting the Django Unchained steelbook, you better get it tomorrow. That thing is probably going to sell out pretty fast. I made that mistake years ago with Inception. I went a week after release day and the worker there said "They sold out a few days ago". Just a heads up. ![]() |

I'm feeling you OP. I didn't buy my first steelbook until last U&S when I picked up at least 8 that were on sale.
Now? I'm waiting until 8:00 in the fricken morning so I can race into Target to get a Django Unchained steelbook, and I haven't gotten up that early in years. |

I'll use this temporary thread that will max out on 52 posts to respond to how I feel about Steels. Totally My Opinion.
I always like how they looked. Always wanted. Last U&S I bought 2, Matrix and Eli. Waste of $10 why? Though the movies are ok for their time, not classics, I realized I bought the package not the movie. I've seen both and was not unhappy with them but had they been in real cases I would have passed. I admit it. I find that movies that will sell themselves won't/don't need SteelBooks. On initial release they might have a limited supply on a classic like ...... UUUmmmm...There must be one. But on last U&S there were tons of Steels at BBY old enough to get for $5. I.E. Hangover 2. (they still have it) So over all I believe that distributors/Studios do steels to increase top line sales. Case in point (and I am so guilty of great packaging) when I se a Django Steel for $15-$20 and I have a RZ cert or U&S I might buy it due to the packaging. Sad I know I admit it.....do you? |

I collect steelbooks too but there are criteria to meet, all of which depend on personal tastes. To me, when I buy a steelbook:
1. I should like the film/films. 2. The steelbook artwork (back and front) is attractive. Many steelbooks do not have attractive artwork: Flash Gordon (UK), 2012, Con Air, The Rock (UK) to name a few. 3. The price is reasonable. 4. The artwork of the steelbook is not printed horizontally. Artwork for steelbooks should be vertically printed because that's how blu ray covers have been designed. In my opinion, consistency is more important than variety in this case. Getting obsessed with or addicted to buying every steelbook is just a symptom of impulsive buying habit, which will drain our pockets and energy. It all goes back to priority and importance in our shopping habits. ![]() |
