These movies can't be long enough. If each movie (fotr, ttt, rotk, the hobbit...) would be 6+ hours long, I would not mind.
I just like the feel of these movies and enjoy every little bit of it. Some people say it's dragging but do they take the time to enjoy it or do they just want to get it over with. The more I can get out of middle earth the happier I am. It's just sad that they are limited to make more movies from middle earth. I probably sound like a total geek but those are the only movies which let me escape in to a different world. (even though it's the same world, just a little earlier. Lol) geekish

This.

I mean, who cares if it takes 45 minutes to get to the action? I can't understand people who think it drags. Ever read a book? Or do you skip a few chapters until something deemed "exciting" happens.

What's a book?

While I love spending time in Middle Earth in the films, I have yet to see one that was better than Tolkien's writings.

Sometimes I wonder how many people still read books. I loved reading The Hobbit. An Unexpected Journey was great, I like it when movies take awhile to get into the action . I have never understood why people complain about the length of a movie .

Here's the thing, a movie is not a book. A book can go on as long as it wants because the reader can go at their own pace. When it comes to movies, that benefit is not there. You, usually, have to tell your story, and tell it well, in under three hours. Most people have plenty of other things to do other than sit through a 6+ hour movie. If you want them to sit through and enjoy a 2-3 hour film, it is your job to make sure they feel that it was time well spent. They should not be thinking of "when will it end". If you don't want a time restraint, do it like Game of Thrones, as a tv series.

That's just the nature of the beast. Personally, I noticed a huge increase in the amount of CGI used in The Two Towers and even more in Return of the King. That's probably the reason I liked Fellowship so much. It felt more intimate and and CGI was used where it was needed. With bigger budgets to play with and advancements in digital technology, they can do anything they want with CGI. But in so doing, it ends up feeling more artificial and manufactured.

I have read The Hobbit a couple times in my life, once when I was younger and once within the last 10 years. Loved the book. Having said that, the movie was just not engaging cinema to me for all the reasons I have mentioned already which I will not rehash again since I have had my say, and no it is not because the first action scene took too long to get to in the beginning of the film.

I love it when those who loved a film or really enjoyed it at least, like to belittle those who did not by suggesting that there must be something wrong with us like we have some sort of ADD disorder. Cinema is either engaging for each of us, or its not and there are so many variables and factors from one viewer to the next that there is no right or wrong. The Hobbit fell flat for many of us due to all the various reasons discussed in the posts that feel that way in this thread. Are you guys so egotistical and narrow minded to think that only your opinion and perspective are "correct"?

I fully respect that many of you liked the film for all the reasons you guys have mentioned even if it does not jive with my own perspective. I understand that each of us are different and like any piece of art, cinema is a VERY subjective subject. How about extending a little courtesy to those who did not like the film even if you dont understand it and understand that we are all different and art (in this case a movie) is very subjective. Just because we did not like the film to some degree (I certainly did not hate it) does not mean we have some sort of allergy to reading in general like suggested in the last few ridiculous and immature posts, it does not mean we have ADD, it does not mean we need action ALL the time, etc, etc........

These threads are great for exploring both sides of the debate as far as movies go until it gets disrespectful and one side tries to force their perspective as superior by such cheap and desperate tactics as belittlement. There is no reason to go there, so why do it?

Actually the first 45 minutes or so "before the action" are some of my favorite bits in the film. I always love a slow build and feel that Fellowship is just as guilty as this as The Hobbit (although that story had more weight to it).

I love the prologue and find it exciting yet informative. I love seeing Frodo and Old Bilbo again--their little chat about the party and the Sackville Baggins got me nerdishly excited. I love Gandalf and Bilbo's little chat, straight from Tolkien's text, and the following Unexpected Party scene. The dwarves were a riot and I loved the songs.

Actually I just loved the whole film haha. Regarding the pace, it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea. If you can't get into the story or are not engaged, then I bet you will find the movie to feel a lot longer--and that's fine--apples to oranges.

Me, personally, cannot wait until the extended cut. I love Jackson's take on Middle Earth

In essence, it's already been announced, since PJ has been upfront since the release of the film at cinemas that there would be an extended version. The precise details — actual running time, price, release date — are missing, but it's generally understood it'll come out at the end of the year, in the publicity ramp-up to the cinema release of The Desolation of Smaug.

No, because it hasn't been formally announced. But it's made from footage that was all filmed natively in 3D — for all we know, the EE could be 3D-only. ;-)

(No, I don't think so either, but it makes as much sense as worrying about there not being a 3D version. They released a 3D version of the cinema cut; of course they're going to do the same with the extended.)

I watched this for the first time a few days ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. My wife even commented that it didn't seem nearly as long as it was!

Completely agreed. I loved the movie and the criticisms are mostly unfounded.

Great film. I loved the back story and the slow burn. Very reminiscent of TFOTR.

i've been re-watching the appendices for the lord of the rings over the last couple of weeks - it's making me very eager for a similar treatment with the hobbit! hopefully the bonus discs are blu-ray, that way there can be a crapload of bonus material.

I still think its disgusting how these film company's are allowed to get away with this, releasing the initial movie, then only to release it again months down the line either in special or extended editions, every film release should be at its best/full version on its initial release day, none of this crap cashing in all the time.

It would be shady if they didn't let people know ahead of time. In this case, Jackson announced the Extended Edition last December, so we've all been able to make informed decisions (I passed on the theatrical, waiting on the 3D extended version).

Well, at the least, all versions should be released on the same day, then we chouse what version we want, otherwise we have to go without or buy a inferior version.
