Default P.T Anderson's 'Inherent Vice'

Quote:
Robert Downey Jr. is making plans to fill the fall hole in his schedule with the lead role in Inherent Vice for writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson.

Anderson has been working on a screenplay adaptation of the 2009 Thomas Pynchon novel while trying to get another film -- an untitled exploration of a religious organization sometimes referred to as The Master -- off the ground. Once Downey dropped out of Disney's Oz, the Great and Powerful last month, it freed him to do another movie later this year after he shoots The Avengers for Marvel and Disney. His commitment to Anderson's movie has recently grown serious.

Vice is a comparatively accessible Pynchon work that tells the story of a stoner detective who gets wrapped up in a number of mysteries in 1969 L.A. while the Manson Family trial growls in the background

This is a great novel, and I'm definitely looking forward to this, as PTA is one of my favorite directors as well. This is actually one of the movies I'm looking forward to the most (along with "The Rum Diary" and "The Wettest County in the World").

It'd be nice to not have to wait another five years for the next PTA film, and having Downey Jr. in there is all the better.

Any reason for that?

I just dont find them interesting or impressive. I usually just find myself bored and baffled by the praise. If others like him, great. More power to 'em. Just not my kind of thing I guess.

Same here. Not feeling the love for PTA's output at all.

If you would have read the article from the user right above you, you would have read this, "As you know Joaquin Phoenix is reteaming with Anderson after Robert Downey Jr. stepped aside/was gently reconsidered." So now you don't have to bother seeing the film at all.

I can't think of another American Director I like more right now. This will be my most anticipated film of 2014

I dont follow every outside link in a thread. I read the OP, read all the posts (the person's post only said filming would start - he left out the new casting info), and then gave my two cents. So

and yes, I am happy I will not have to see this film at all. If PTA wasn't enough to turn me off, Joaquin is definitely a deal-breaker.

I think RDJ would've been perfect as a hippie detective (he's not really that far off in real life, is he?). He recently cited he was too old for the part but he and PTA remain good friend. Joaquin is a fantastic actor but perhaps harder to picture in the role for me. We'll see how he does.

I'm really excited for this. PTA directing a movie about a stoner. That's music to my ears.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as bitter or ill-tempered. Sometimes it's hard to convey thoughts on the internet without it sounding completely opposite from its original intent.

understood. tone doesnt carry well as text on a screen. My apologies if I got too defensive. I've grown too used to the amount of people on this forum who DO immediately attack differing opinions.

I'm not a joaquin phoenix fan at all. I don't find him as engaging as RDJ on screen and this movie caught my eye because of his involvement mostly.

I might get a chance to see it but i'm not expecting too much given the replacement lead

Joaquin Phoenix playing a stoner, because they felt RDJ couldn't play a laconic self-indulgent addict realistically. I sometime wonder how actors find such roles within themselves.

(Well, at least we don't have to worry about "Zodiac II" comparisons.)
