I'm a big fan of the Archos machines. I have an older 420 model. But it plays Divx and Xvid files in addition to music and pictures. I like it a lot. And the newer Archos machines are even sweeter.

I like the Creative Zen more as you don't have to go through the stupid itunes interface to add music. A lot can be done from the explorer window on Windows XP.

I like my iPhone and I've been through many cell phones over the years. Could it be better? Of course! Sure there are a lot of limitations but it's okay with my usage. As for music, I listen to some at work or when traveling, not-so-good music is better than no music at all.

I believe that is Fall Out Boy's [fill in your own choice of suck band here] main mantra.

I had a Zune (I switched from a really old iPod) and it was ok for awhile. Then the HDD on it failed and I had to get a new mp3 player. Since I just got a new Macbook Pro for Christmas, I decided to go back to iPod. I love it and don't know why I ever switched away from it in the first place. I have a couple of movies on mine and the 3rd season of The Office that I ripped from my DVD's. It's obviously not the best viewing experience, but I travel a lot for my job and the flights are only an hour or two so it's not worth bringing out the laptop for 30 mins. and then going through the hassle of putting everything away. So in that respect it is nice to have something I can just pull out of my pocket and watch.

And of course I have all my music on it so I can listen to my music in the car because I've gotten so sick of radio and I'm not in my car enough to warrant getting satellite radio.

It's really not that bad. It was just initially really shitty for the price. I imagine its an ok value now, but still has flaws that should be addressed in a new version.

Another thing that's starting to bother me is it seems most of the icrap stuff does not have replace-able batteries. I suppose you recycle the whole device when the battery go bad. But the world flooded with peoples dead ipods isn't a pretty picture in my mind. I'm not the greenest fella but this seems about the least eco-friendly thing there is.
Apple will recycle your old iPod and give you a discount on your new one. I had my second iPod's battery go bad. It won't hold a charge. However, I'm still using it with some Altec Lansing speakers for a stereo, but I could've gotten a discount on the video iPod when it came out by giving it to Apple to recycle or refurb.

What a well written and informative piece

He's wrong about using mp3's as ringtones. Most of the other negatives he has apply to Nokia phones as well, but he cleverly has them worded so that they're specific to Apple and thus don't apply to his Nokia.

I can in no way fathom how one would consider the browser on the Nokia anywhere in the same league as the browser on the iPhone. I've used quite a few Nokia (and other manufacturers) devices and their browsers always left quite a bit to be desired. To each their own though . . .

The iPhone has a replaceable battery, it's just not user replaceable. Not sure about the iPod to be honest, but somebody put the thing together, so I'm sure you could get a new battery for it.
And Apple charges you I think $60 for an iPod, and $70 for an iPhone to replace it (plus rental on another iPhone, that's another $30). A $5 battery and 5 minutes of time

All because Lord Stevie claims it can't be "thin enough" with a replaceable battery.

More like his wallet is "too thin". I count his expenses including tech time to be under $10(standard tech rate $30/hour, 5 minutes comes to $2.50), given the prices you can buy the batteries for several places online, and they make you pay for shipping.

That extra $50 is your tithe to the Church of Jobs.

Oh yeah, and he gets 10% of your iPhone bill to boot, so not only are they raking in a full 100% profit on each and every phone, but they get $144 minimum per user ($59.95 minimum package x 10%=$6 x 24 months)

I really have been pleased with my iphone...with that being said I didnt think I would ever own one because I have been anti ipod for the longest time, not anti Apple. But low and behold I have one now, and still have my Zune which I love. But yeah its all personal preference and stuff about these things.

What battery for any cell phone costs five dollars? The average for an OEM battery is more like 30-35.

I really don't care where the money for the cell bill goes . . . it gets paid to one person or the other, and compared to the other wireless carriers, my bill isn't much more expensive. It fits my needs and is worth every penny.

I really don't understand the demonization of certain corporate figures. Maybe just because their faces are more prominent, but some already rich ******* gets your money almost no matter where you spend it.

I paid about $8.95 for a Motorola original OEM battery for my phone over the net.

When you buy them in stores it costs that much, not if you shop online.

You can buy the exact same battery that's in the iPod for approx $5. The iPhone battery is closer to 10 or so. 5 minutes with a screwdriver and a $5 battery, is that really worth $60+ shipping in any sane world?

Touche.

I got the 2 year deal from Apple, so I'm not really worried too much about it. I figure since the iPhone is upgradeable to a pretty good degree, spending money to replace the battery is better than having to buy a new phone due to obsolescence. I'm generally pretty good with electronics, but I don't think I'd really want to get down and dirty with my iPhone. I'm looking at it right now and I don't even know where to start in taking it apart.

I'm not too crazy about the Ipod thing either, but moreso because I can care less about the mp3 thing. However, after I picked up an Ipod for my wife, I admit as a gadget the darned things are addicting and I see why they're so popular. If I could get over music compression I'd have one for sure.
