Default IMAX Private Theatre

Quote:
"IMAX has revealed plans to enter the home theater market with IMAX Private Theatre, which is exactly what it sounds like. But before you get carried away with your fantasies, keep in mind that only serious — and seriously wealthy — cinephiles need apply. According to one report, the price tag falls somewhere in the low millions. So what exactly does all that dough get you? Find out after the jump."
So what are your thoughts on this possible million-dollar renovation? It seems like a pricey dream come true for me!

I thought about this awhile ago, as an idea not that I had the funds.
I'm guessing they are going to use almost the same stuff they use in theaters only tailored to fit you (screen size, audio and seating).

Its cool and if I had the cash to burn I'd do it. Yet to be honest I'd only pay IMAX for their sound system and pick a different projector. Now not saying its bad- not at all but IMAX is known for its sheer size really. Also for the longest time the clearest picture- but competitors are catching up. Now unless you are doing a screen that takes the full potential of IMAX then there is no reason to have an IMAX projector.

Also unless we are seriously going to 4k-8k content then you are losing much of the power and beauty of owning one of these systems.
I love that they are offering this but it really is only for the rich and Hollywood.
Seriously though for all my talk I'd still get one. Yet still I think savy people can build better for themselves.

It's not true IMAX unless it's film. Those piece of crap digital projectors are not IMAX. If you really wanted IMAX in your house, you would need to have a projectionist on hand at all times. Not to mention, you'd also need a three-story building if you wanted the right size screen.

Looks BEAUTIFUL and I admit I was like .

But...the way I look at it....I have my own private IMAX already with my projector. 124" image from 10' away =

May not be IMAX caliber...but it's good enough for me and sometimes, that's enough. Besides....I sent the mortgage and the bills out already so I am a little short on cash, lol

The days of film have gone down in the west sadly.
This new (digital) IMAX will be the only true IMAX. They'll catch up to film quality I just don't know when. Besides most people do not want a film IMAX home theater- those suckers are loud. Also you want to use it as multi-media as well.

Totally agree, digital does not come close to true IMAX. You would also need more than a three story building. The digital 2K IMAX is a scam.

I don't think digital will catch up to 15/70 for IMAX, but I think 35mm will be surpassed by digital or at least matched eventually.

Very good question!!

I do know, if that ever happens, I might have more people in my theater on a regular.

I often have a nice group, but I wouldn't want that small group to get outta hand.

It'll be a lot cheaper to go to an IMAX theater, and see the movie, than to build one in your home. Unless you're a multi-millionaire or billionaire, and have the accommodations to install a 72 ft × 53 ft screen, and a genuine IMAX sound system, nobody else couldn't afford it anyway.

An IMAX theater should remain for commercial use only because, a real IMAX theater couldn't be sonically and visually replicated equivalently for the home theater market, without the audio becoming a severe distraction to neighbors.
