Sounds like a pain in the ass process to update firmware on the receivers.

Question... Once the firmware is on disc, can ANY unit capable of CD playback be used to update via optical? Could I use a PS3, Xbox360, DVD Player, or HD DVD player so long as it's connected via optical?

this is what someone posted from a german site :

I od hope this isn't old news but, here's the english text from the German Onkyo fix for the DSP update to "Bugfix: the Pop-noise with some HD-DTS material"

ONKYO
IMAGINATIVE SIGHT & SOUND
DSP Firmware Update of TX SR 605, 705, 805, 875 and TX NR 905
Bugfix: Pop-noise with some HD-DTS material
To carry out the update you will need the software supplied by ONKYO, a PC with the possibility to burn
a an Audio-CD, a CD player with optical output, an optical cable and your Receiver!

so any cd player with optical out should work

I just checked OnkyoUSA and they do not yet have any firmware updates listed ... so I think I am going to wait it out. The last thing I want to do is destroy my receiver with a european firmware version.

It is strange though that Onkyo Europe (Germany) is leading Onkyo USA on this front. If anything, I figured it'd be the opposite. But good for our friends in Germany though!

actually i find the opposite to be true. the u.s. sites either never have any updates or are the last ones to acknowledge if one even exists!

From the US site.

http://www.onkyousa.com/605firmware_replace.cfm

TX-SR605 Firmware Update
for both the TX-SR605 and TX-SR605S

A firmware update for the TX-SR605 is now available through Onkyo’s Independent Regional Service Centers. This update will address the product’s ability to decode the Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD High Resolution and Master Audio bit stream signals when products incorporating this capability become available in the market.

This update affects only a limited number of early production TX-SR605 units. Onkyo has included this update in all later production models. To determine if your unit is one of the few affected units please enter the 10 digit product serial number below.

If your unit is eligible for this update, it will be done free of charge. You must follow the instruction on this and the following pages to receive the prepaid return mailing label. Units received without this label will not be processed.

We wish you many years of enjoyment with your TX-SR605 and its HD capabilities.

I did the update and it works. I used my Panny bd30 to do it so those that say they needed a old cd player may not have done it right.

Download firmware
hook up optical cable to input 1 make sure you put the player on input one
Burn to cd
turn power off on onkyo
wait 3 seconds hit display power
hit tone Plus or >
then return
will say firmware update
press play on cd player.
display will read dsp 1 dsp 2 then dsp 3
then should say omplete then turn lear then should trun off

Pretty much it

what do you guys mean when you say "the audio lock issue with D* HD DVRs"? Is this when the sound doesn't play for like a second in between commercials and programs on tv? Cause this is happening to me..

Did it and went ok, it never said completed so just turned it off (The update only lasts approx 2 mins) works fine though.

Does yours seem quieter now?

dont think anyone knows. but im hesitant to do the european update. no one knows what the long term affects are.
how long did it take for the dts bomb to come out? vs how long will it take for another problem from european update to appear on u.s. units.

i have not been able to get an answer for this. attitude is basically do it or dont but no explaination.

On AVS they have a thread about the DSP updates and eventually there is supposed to be a firmware update. I did the DSP update, wasn't too hard but it does clear your settings.
