Default "Black Mass" (Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton)

Quote:
On the heels of word this morning that Joel Edgerton will star opposite Michelle Williams in a remake of the Italian thriller The Double Hour, Deadline is reporting that the Great Gatsby star will appear opposite Johnny Depp in the upcoming Black Mass. Edgerton will play FBI agent John Connolly, who was childhood friend of Bulger.

Black Mass tells the true story of Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. However, after the Feds closed in on their targets, they double crossed Bulger and ultimately prosecuted him, along with his partner in crime and the original FBI agent working with him.

Barry Levinson is attached to helm the Cross Creek crime thriller, which will be produced by Brian Oliver, Tyler Thompson, Nigel Sinclair, Tobin Armbrust, John Lesher, and Christi Dembrowski.

EXCLUSIVE: Johnny Depp has made his deal to star in Black Mass, the drama Scott Cooper will direct about the Boston crime kingpin-turned-fugitive Whitey Bulger, for Cross Creek Pictures and Exclusive Media. Now, they are in early talks with Tom Hardy to play John Connolly, the FBI agent and childhood pal of Bulger, who is in prison for tipping Bulger that he was about to be indicted. That led Bulger to go from ruthless Boston crime kingpin to the top of the FBI’s most wanted list. Domestic distribution hasn’t yet been decided and there are some territories that Exclusive is selling at Berlin, a task made easier by these casting developments. Production will begin in May.

Depp was originally expected to play Bulger when Barry Levinson was attached to direct, but the deal fell through over money even though the deal was near $20 million. Deadline revealed last month that talks had rekindled with Depp, and this has now become a blue chip project, particularly when Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace helmer Cooper boarded it. The script is by Mark Mallouk, who adapted the 2001 Dick Lehr/Gerald O’Neill New York Times bestseller Black Mass: The True Story Of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI And The Irish Mob.

While Bulger has been a composite for mobsters in several films, a real movie on him was inevitable. Joe Berlinger, of Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster and Paradise Lost fame, unveiled at Sundance Whitey, a superb documentary that asked hard questions on whether Bulger was an FBI informant (I’ll have a story on Berlinger soon), but his crimes were brutal long before he disappeared for a decade before finally getting caught in California in 2011 and sent to prison for the rest of his life. Many felt Bulger could never have gotten that far without the help of Connolly, an FBI agent and childhood pal of Bulger and his brother William, the former president of the Massachusetts Senate. Connolly was tasked with bringing down the Italian mob, and he was aided by Bulger, who burnished his own position as Boston crime kingpin by getting rid of the competition for his Winter Hill gang. Connolly was lauded for his work before things went south for him. He eventually was convicted of racketeering and obstruction of justice for aiding Bulger, who is currently in a Massachusetts state prison for second-degree murder.

Bulger and his criminal exploits made him the basis for characters like the one that Jack Nicholson played in the Martin Scorsese-directed The Departed and Pete Postlethwaite played in the Ben Affleck-directed The Town. (Affleck has his own Whitey Bulger project scripted by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter with Matt Damon expected to play the mobster, but he’ll next direct Dennis Lehane’s Live By Night so there’s no way that Bulger film will beat this one into production.) Even as he was masterminding a violent gang – the federal case against him alleges 19 murders – Bulger was an FBI informant, a role he took on discreetly to take down a rival gang. But the tables were turned on him: After the feds closed in on their targets, they double-crossed Bulger and ultimately prosecuted him, along with his partner in crime and the original FBI agent working with him.

Black Mass is being produced by Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, John Lesher and his LeGrisbi banner. If Depp steps back into it, they will be joined by Christi Dembrowski, Depp’s partner in Infinitum Nihil. Exclusive Media’s Tobin Armbrust, President of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions, and Cross Creek Pictures SVP Production Adam Kassan will oversee production. UTA reps Depp.

Nice! These are my favorite type of films and it's nice to see Depp getting back into roles like the one he had in Blow and Donnie Brasco.

Benedict Cumberbatch Replaces Guy Pearce On ‘Black Mass’ as Adam Scott Joins

http://thefilmstage.com/news/benedic...m-scott-joins/

Quote:
Although production has already kicked off on location in Boston, there is still major casting underway for Black Mass, the next film from Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Crazy Heart). Led by Johnny Depp as the notorious (and recently convicted) Boston mobster Whitey Bulger, the ensemble also includes Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple and Jesse Plemons. Today now brings news of a casting shake-up and perhaps an unexpected addition.

First up, Guy Pearce was expected to play the gangster’s law-friendly brother Billy Bulger, but Boston Globe reports that he had to drop out for unknown reasons and a replacement has already been brought in. Benedict Cumberbatch, who’ll be seen this fall in The Imitation Game, has stepped into the role, making for no complaints here.

As for the next addition, THR reports that Parks & Recreation star Adam Scott will jump back into drama, playing a FBI agent named Robert Fitzpatrick. While the actor is known for his comedic roles, I urge one to check out The Vicious Kind or even The Aviator to see his other side. As for Black Mass, itwill be released next October, but one can check out a documentary on the lead subject this summer

I know someone in this movie. I almost tried out for an extra, but I didn't want to wait for the several hours alone.

First Look: Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass

Quote:
“He could be charming. He could be ruthless. He was like a cobra—you never knew where he could strike,” says director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) of notorious crime boss Whitey Bulger, played by Johnny Depp in Black Mass (out Sept. 18). The film tells the true story of how Bulger, the brother of a state senator (Benedict Cumberbatch), became the most feared gangster in Boston while simultaneously serving as an FBI informant to take down the Italian Mafia.

Depp may not seem the obvious choice for the role of the blue-eyed, fair-haired Bulger, but once he was in character, the effect was palpable. “A lot of people on set knew Whitey intimately,” says Cooper. “They got chills at the resemblance. Some of them couldn’t even look at him.”

To re-create Bulger’s intimidating style and persona, Cooper and Depp pored over surveillance tapes and old FBI photographs. In the scene (shown above) Depp’s Bulger walks down the street after killing a man in a parking lot. “He murdered him in front of numerous witnesses in broad daylight,” Cooper says. “In a word, Whitey was brazen.”

And so was Depp in his portrayal. “It’s easy to be the mustache twirling villain but this performance couldn’t be further from that,” the director says. “He is truly gifted.”

Wasn't Frank Costello from The Departed also inspired by Bulger?

There's a pretty interesting Whitey Bulger documentary on Netflix called Whitey: The United States of America Vs James J. Bulger.

Doubt this will flop seems like something people would want to see and not a huge budget.
