Embarrassing, I know. I do also own Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cars, Cool Hand Luke, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Sting, Torn Curtain, and The Verdict. I should probably watch them, huh?

I really want to see Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Fat Man and Little Boy, and Hud. Maybe we'll see them hit Blu soon.

You should check out The Towering Inferno. That's one of my favorite Newman films, and he's teamed up with Steve McQueen. The movie looks incredible on Blu-ray, and it's a great package all around.

The cast of The Towering Inferno is great all around, in fact. Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Richard Chamberlain, Fred Astaire, Robert Wagner, Susan Blakely, and even O.J. Simpson. It's a masterpiece that I revisit at least a couple times a year.

The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, and The Verdict are my three favorite Newman films, those should be watched ASAP. Torn Curtain is probably my least favorite Hitchcock.

I remember HDNet was playing a HD version of HUD a few years back, hopefully that one makes the jump to blu soon.

I've been having a hard time pulling the trigger on The Hustler. I saw The Color of Money a few months ago and I honestly didn't like it, but then again, I'm not a big pool fan.

I watched it on YouTube last year while reading Peter Hames's book on the Czech New Wave. The video didn't have English subtitles, so it was a purely visual experience. I think it will please Andrei Rublev fans, fans of Soviet/Eastern Bloc films of the '60s in general, and fans of black & white cinematography. It really is an underappreciated classic (even when seen in 360 dpi without subs) largely because its been scarcely seen outside Europe.

Towering Inferno is very fun, but the resolition is completely unrealistic. I guess that only adds to the charm.

For me, The Sting, Butch Cassidy & Cool Hand Luke are his best. He was also in one of my favorite Mel Brooks films: Silent Movie.

It takes a lot of water to put out a big fire, I guess. It's a fun ending, though.

One of the first Paul Newman films that I ever saw was Fort Apache the Bronx. This was one of the first R-rated films that I had ever seen, and some of the images from that movie really unsettled me at the age of 10. The movie is more like a vignette of various scenarios involving Officer Murphy (Newman) as he patrols the Bronx neighborhoods and struggles against serial killers, racism in the police department, a girlfriend with a dark secret, and general burnout. This was a pretty dark movie, especially for a 10 year-old kid, but Newman excelled in the role, as did Pam Grier, Ken Wahl, Rachel Ticotin, Edward Asner, and Danny Aiello.

I watched Torn Curtain a few minutes ago and I loved it.

It was a really enjoyable spy film and it was everything I was looking for. Highly recommended.

Silly question. I have a Best Buy gift card and wanted to pick up High and Low. Is this the "standard" version? (It says Japanese & Enhanced 16x9 widescreen and doesn't have the blue sticker on front that quite a few Criterions have). Thanks, guys.

I'm sure Enhanced 16x9 is just BestBuy crazy-talk, and the lack of a blue sticker is just, on the website they don't always have the exact right picture. It says blu-ray, there's only one blu-ray, it's surely fine.

I got into the interest of looking into some Pre-Code Hollywood films, but there are soooo many of them that I have no clue which are worth the watch. I've seen (and love) Scarface so I'm sure I should just check out some other popular crime films from that era; and I own Island of Lost Souls so I should get to watching that soon. What else would you all recommend?

On dvd, if so I can list many as it's my favorite period of Hollywood films excluding the silent era. Would you be fine with dvd-r, as Warner Archive, etc has a bunch.
