I suppose it's possible (although Criterion had Two Lane Blacktop on DVD before MoC, and released their Island of Lost Souls before MoC).

OK. I guess when they licensed the DVD from RusiCiCo there was no HD version to license. Still, it's a moot point if it isn't being restored and/or scanned in HD anytime soon.

A little OT, but does anyone here own Fassbinder's The Anarchy of the Imagination? I have a couple of questions regarding a section of the book.

I had read a review of the DVD that was not very flattering too. Thanks for the advice. I'll just wait.

Stalker is a stellar sci-fi film. I anxiously await the BluRay upgrade.

In other news, James Gray (Two Lovers, We own the Night) will be directing a science fiction thriller.

The digibook for King Kong (1933) is quite awesome. King Kong has been one of my all-time top ten movies forever, and the Blu-ray looks fantastic. I was fortunate to see this movie on the big screen last summer, but I love watching it on Blu-ray almost as much.

It's region free and I just got my copy in. All of the Concorde sets seem to be Region Free.

I ordered it. Isn't it sad? Two great American directors: John Cassavetes and David Lynch, have boxed sets in Germany but not their home country?

Was it one of those 2K Cinemark Ones? I stopped going to those as they look no better than the BluRay transfers.

What's your opinion on the 70's King Kong?

The King Kong (1933) screening that I saw was at a college campus theater. It did not look much better than the Blu-ray transfer, but it was pretty impressive nonetheless.

I grew up watching the 1976 King Kong along with the 1933 version. A couple years back, I found a DVD copy of the 1976 version for two dollars, and, upon revisiting it for the first time in years, I was pleased to discover that, while it has lost some of its steam, it is still quite watchable and fun. The Peter Jackson version fails me, though.

I don want to derail the thread but I enjoy Peter Jackson's King Kong much more than The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I will probably pick the 76 version if it ever hits BluRay (with modest expectations). The fact that its a Dino De Laurentis production and the director previously did Rapture and Towering Inferno intrigues me.

Jackson's film is just soooooo long and, for me anyway, fatally miscast with Jack Black as Carl Denham. Most of his time on the island is spent reacting wide-eyed to something and he hardly seems the take-charge guy Robert Armstrong made him in the original. Don't get me started on that ridiculous ice pond sequence with Ann and Kong in New York.

Peter Jackson's Kong was a fail in my book as well. It was a study in the 'more is better' theory. Is too bad, because the effects work was ridiculously awesome.

Pluses ...
Naomi Watts
Amazing animation/matte/FX work

Minuses ...
Jack Black
Adrian Brody
Stupidly long TRex Sequence
Central Park Scene
Bad Script
