Exactly. You hit it spot on. Not many movies are that excellent in all areas. Usually one will outshine the other out of the acting, characters/writing, and cinematography. All are 5/5 in TTCT, Veronique, and The Decalogue.

Ha! Better not, though. Now that I'm caught up watching my Blu-rays, I like the idea of staying caught up and watching movies as I purchase them. I'll also need extra cash for this weekend. I don't have much of a social life these days, but there's still a faint semblance of a social life, and I'll be out and about for a couple of days.
There are a few non-Criterion Blu-rays that I want to purchase in early June, anyway. Earthquake and Dirty Mary Crazy Larry/Race with the Devil will probably be ordered from Amazon when I can team them up for free shipping. |

I decided not to buy Ministry of Fear, because that particular Blu-ray will always be available for a low price. I wanted to use the 40% for The Leopard, since The Leopard is normally priced at $49.99 at B&N. Being able to grab it for $26 was quite nice.

Was your copy of The Leopard very beat up?

Nope. I have not unwrapped it yet, but the digipak appears to be in flawless condition. I would not have purchased it otherwise. I like to buy the digipaks in person for this reason.
It's a handsome-looking package. I should have a review of the actual movie up sometime this weekend for y'all. |

![]() As far as reviewing it, so much has been said about it already. That's why it's more fun to write about either new releases or unpopular films. |

This is why I have not pulled the trigger on the awesome $63.99 price for the America Lost and Found box set from Amazon. I want to buy that box set in person. |

I had fun writing up a short take on Sweet Smell of Success, although that one has been reviewed to death. |

Brute Force is an awesome Criterion that needs to be a Blu-ray. I've already raved about Airport. Even the 1977 version of The Island of Dr. Moreau (a guilty pleasure movie of mine) benefits from his presence. There are a great many other movies, of course. I had been wanting to see Sweet Smell of Success for ages anyway, though. The same with The Leopard. A short while back, I saw a Blu-ray pitch where Clint Eastwood was raving about the restoration of The Leopard, and scenes from the film were intercut into his review. That really got me interested, because the images in the movie are pretty amazing. |

Criterion has long had a great eye for family centric dramas. Still Walking, Summer Hours, A Christmas Tale, and on a bigger scale, Fanny and Alexander. Edward Yang's final film, Yi Yi, fits in nicely with all the above, and, with the exception of Bergman's epic, may be the greatest of them all. Yang examines the interpersonal relationships within the family, and to a lesser extent, the family as a whole. The juxtaposition between NJ and Sherry's rekindling relationship and the blossoming relationship between Ting-Ting and "Fatty" is a thing of beauty, and probably the best use of "poetic overlapping" as Kent Jones dubs it in his accompanying essay. The film's final scene is one of the most moving pieces I've seen from the Criterion collection.
On a slightly related note, Kent Jones is absolutely my favorite contributor to Criterion's essays. Whose writing do you guys like most? |

Things to Come was filmed as mostly British Blitz-era wartime-morale, but in both cases, hoo-boy, and you thought Wells' BOOKS were a little heavy on the pro-socialist allegory... |

Got my 1st 3 Criterion BDs today at Barnes & Noble - Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums and Dazed and Confused.
Also, I asked this a few pages back, but it might have gotten lost in the discussion, does anyone know if there are any plans to release Loves of a Blonde on BD? |
