United Kingdom Maniac (2012) - July 1st, 2013

British distributors Metrodome Video will release on Blu-ray for director Franck Khalfoun's Maniac (2012), starring Elijah Wood, America Olivo, Nora Arnezeder, and Sammi Rotibi. The film, which is a remake of William Lustig's 1980 cult slasher, will be available for purchase on July 1.

SYNOPSIS: To say that Frank (Wood) is a troubled young man would be an understatement - as the ever-growing number of young women he has murdered since the death of his mother (Olivo), with whom he enjoyed an unhealthily close relationship, demonstrates only too well. Frank runs a mannequin store and likes to apply the scalps of his victims to the models in his spare time. However, when beautiful young artist Anna (Arnezeder) wanders into the store and talks about making use of its resources for an exhibition she is planning, she presents Frank with a troubling quandary. Anna appears to offer the possibility of a human relationship that will the void created by his mother's death, but she also excites his desire to kill and possess. Will Frank be able to overcome his homicidal urges?

Been wanting to see this for so long, and had been considering paying out for the German blu-ray. I think I can hold out a little longer for the UK release!

Think I'll rent this. I'm a big fan of the original, but willing to give it a go.

Wow, never even knew this was made! Can't wait to see how they (if they do) re-create the Shotgun and dream sequence.

I thought this sounded terrible when they first announced it ("are they serious? Elijah Wood in the Joe Spinnel role!") but the directorial choice of shooting it in first person perspective, where you only see Wood in reflections every now and again, sounds pretty novel and intriguing to me. Definitely a rental at the very least.

I've heard nothing but positive things about this and wouldn't mind seeing it. Mind you, I haven't even watched the original yet! I wonder if the BBFC would pass it uncut nowadays.

No shotgun in this one. Dream sequence is there (at the end).

Same here, I love the original and in fact have 3 different DVD versions of it (still searching for the tin release!).

Normally I would think that this just cannot be remade but have heard good things about it so am willing to give it a shot.

And wont be disappointed that Wood cannot replace Spinell because no one can.

Original was crazy, cant duplicate the same effect of the shotty scene now, when i first saw it, it looked real and sick. Been wanting to see this seen it was announced

That'll just be due to the PAL speedup, it was passed uncut theatrically.

As far as I know, there is no PAL speed up on Blu-ray Discs. I wouldn't say I know a lot about this stuff but I'm pretty sure the whole PAL and NTSC thing was a product of DVD's...

Indeed, but the BBFC could very well have used a DVD when classifying the home video release hence the discrepancy in running times.
