I will definitely see that Sorrentino film down the road, but Il Divo left me a bit cold. I feel when I dive into the history of the post-war Italian democracy, I will find it more satisfying.

Along the same lines, I did love Marco Bellocchio's Vincere.

Not on Blu-ray.

There is a Stand by Me Blu-ray, and it's quite impressive as far as content and presentation. This has been one of my all-time Top 10 films since I saw it in the theater in 1986, so I wouldn't mind seeing a Criterion release. I doubt that such a thing will happen in the near future, though.

You definitely need to know Italian history well to appreciate Il Divo.

These two films, however, you could enjoy without knowing much about Italian politics or culture. The gangster film with Servillo reminds of Melville's work.

Marco Bellocchio:

I would recommend Buongiorno, notte, about the execution of Prime Minister Aldo Moro. Some knowledge of Italian (or at least European) politics, however, is again required. Artificial Eye have a super DVD release. We need a Blu-ray now.

And this is one of Bellocchio's best (see below). Hypnotic film. I have the Italian DVD release:

And Gli Occhi... could have easily been in the Criterion Collection. I don't understand why Criterion have not introduced at least one of Bellocchio's films to U.S. film aficionados. He is without a shadow of a doubt one of Italy's top 3 directors.

I love history and am comfortable in relating films to cultural and political movements (especially American), but Il Divo was hard to get on the same wavelength as because it was not only a plotty film that required you know much about Italian politics, but it also had such a bold visually exuberant style. I had no trouble digesting the bulk of the narrative, but relating it to actual Italian politics and what Sorrentino's camera was trying to do was a whole other matter. I failed to grasp the significance of a few key characters until i researched it afterwards.

Yes, when watching Vincere, I knew I was in the hands of a master craftsman. I will definitely check both those and the Paolo Sorrentino films in the future when I am ready.

Speaking of Italian politics...

One of the reasons why I enjoyed delving into Visconti's The Leopard two days ago was because I could make a project out of it, and take a glance at the historical background of the unification of Italy during the nineteenth century.

The Leopard is a personal film more than a political film, so it can be enjoyed without any background information. I did enjoy reading some history after the fact, though.

I need to watch the film with the commentary track, but I wanted my first viewing to be just for entertainment purposes. Thankfully, the film is infinitely entertaining.

I blind bought Design for Living since I like old films...hoping it's good!

I went into Design For Living with high expectations and it fell short to me. I understand that Noel Coward wrote the original play, but the entire thing felt very bland.

I'm sure you'll like it, though. There's a bunch of people on the forum who like it.

The current 40% off sale at Barnes and Noble may not be great for Citerion Collection films (knowing that the July 50% off CC sale is right around the corner.) However, I have used it to make some pretty shrewd buys, the shrewdest coming tonight as I possessed a 15% off one item coupon. I was able to purchase with that coupon and the current 40% off sale and my 10% off membership Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion (Studio Canal) for $13.86, which includes a sales tax of zero since I made the purchase in the state of Delaware.

Wow, I'm so thrilled I stumbled upon this site and thread in particular. I've just recently started purchasing and watching Criterion blu rays and have been blown away so far. So glad there's a huge thread of like minded film fans out there.

One question for your guys: What do you guys think of the prospects of Alejandro Jodorowsky's films making it to Criterion? Holy Mountain or El Topo in particular. Are there any logistical things preventing it? I'm fairly new to the Criterion scene so I'm not too sure how all that behind the scenes stuff works.

I don't think they own the rights. Plus, I think the current releases of them are sufficient enough.

You are in for a real treat. Might be the best looking B&W film I've seen on the format.

Yeah you guys are probably right. I do own the blu rays of both and love them. I just really love the whole Criterion packaging.
