No, search for Test Pattern on HDNET and you should be able to pause that and use it. It would be better to get the patterns from DrMpeg at w6rz.net and stream them to the HD DVR and calibrate that way.

Is HDNET still doing that?

Thanks, I'll check it out. Do they explain anything, or is it just one screen that stays on for a period of time?

I am not sure I think it might just be the test pattern. But if you go to this site it will explain everything you need to know in lay man's terms.http://www.videouniversity.com/tvbars2.shtml

I wish I could give credit to who posted that link originally but I saw it on a post here in one of the other threads.

I think basic test patternt must be preloaded in player ROM by manufacturer.

F.e. my sammy lcd 224BW has some in its memory.

Thanks! That's good to know. I didn't even realize HDNet did this at all, and I've been trying to find a good calibration solution for DishHD.

I just finished using the dve, got my sharpness correct and brightness correct. If anybody else has used this, Im wondering about the constrast, where you it says you should see every step in the gray scale, I see them at any setting, so if someone could tell me exactly what I should be looking for, and also the color, I wasnt sure exactly how to use the three color card with red blue and green or what exact test pattern I use for color, I just did kind of a basic run through but it seems fairly user friendly

Question

Is there any benifit to using DVE for the audio if my receiver already has self calibration mode? Also I have a 7.1 speaker setup, and I thought someone mentioned it only sets up 5.1 so it probably wouldn't be useful?

Thanks in advance.

Talking about essentials, this disc should provide tests for discrete 7.1 channel.

Just a quick question, not sure if this is on topic or not. My brother and I have a 50" SXRD set and I was wondering if getting the DVE disc is worth it or should we have it professionaly calibrated by a ISF tech?

I also see all of the steps in the gray scale regardless of setting. What I did to set mine was to just watch the white ends of the scale closely, and back the contrast off a little from the point that the whites start to bloom a little bit. It's very subtle on my display. What did you end up with for a sharpness setting? Mine was good at zero as the narration said it should be.

If I understand the color setting procedure correctly, you first look through the blue filter and adjust the color control so that you only see blue and black (blue screen with 6 black squares on it). After setting it for blue, the reds and greens will also be correct if your color decoder is working as it's supposed to. When you look through the green filter you should see nothing but green and black, and when you look through the red filter you should see nothing but red and black. The square patterns (black squares) will not be the same as with the blue filter though.

Assuming that I'm understanding this correct (somebody please chime in if I'm wrong), after I set the color using the blue filter then my reds were perfect but my greens were just slightly off. I guess I need to fool around with green directly in the color processor but it's off so slightly that I'm not sure if I will bother. It might throw the others out of whack, no?

My green was just out of whack too, but after playing with a bunch of other little settings, all it did was make the blu and the red worse... so without paying a professional I will deal with it I made very minor adjustments to the factory settings to be honest, but it did make a noticeable difference.

Same here, reds and blues are fine, green is just slightly off. I was told by a calibrator that it's normal for them to be slightly off, so I am not going to worry about it to much at all.
