To the Wonder is my #1, actually. My list would be in almost opposite order (although not really, because I'd put The Thin Red Line above The New World and Badlands---I didn't like Badlands much). I haven't seen Days Of Heaven but i've ordered it so I should see it soon.

I absolutely think that The New World is Malick at his best. His juxtapositions between nature and savagery are absorbing and moving. The music in particular is breathtaking with very little of James Horner's original score and more of Wagner and Mozart in certain sequences. I was fortunate enough to see this film in a movie theater when it was released and I believe there were only about 6 people in the entire theater that night.

Yes. I agree with your rankings (although I would rank Tree of Life over Badlands). The top two feature Malick at his impressionistic best. Both are not strictly about presenting history as close as possible to what we already know (although my World History teacher stated that The New World was pretty factually correct), but trying to uncover the root truth. What drove the action in each narrative and what we can take from it today. In a way every use of ellipses in The New World is as startling as the creation sequences in Tree of Life.

Story questioning over story telling.

I've got a whole bunch of swag bucks points ready to convert to B&N gift cards as soon as the sale is officially announced. The wait is killing me.

The first thing I thought was the "Speak Italian" scene in A Fish Called Wanda... but that isn't right either.
But isn't the protagonist a fisherman?

Will this 2 for 1 B&N sale be online as well?

My own is:

1. Badlands
2.The Tree of Life
3. The Thin Red Line
4. The New World
5. Days of Heaven
6. To the Wonder

None of Malick's films really do much for me beyond my top two. I can appreciate them from an objective standpoint, but if my own personal opinion is assessed I think rather lowly of them.

I could definitely go for the Rossellini films with Ingrid Bergman. Since Voyage to Italy was recently restored.

To my discredit, though, I have no idea how the cartoon hint plays into this.

I would be disappointed if it was indeed The Original Italian Job. The UK region free release is pretty satisfactory.

You can rest easy because it's 100% most assuredly definitely Bergman/Rossellini

I get the direction signs, and the way the tuna plays into those films. Is it possible though that there are two clues embedded in the image - perhaps the big fish indicates something else also? I'm thinking of the previous clue that seemed to indicate both To Be and Frances Ha (although, I understand, the latter hasn't yet been confirmed for release).

To my knowledge, Criterion has never done a 'double clue' and if they do release Frances Ha it may well just be a coincidence!

Let me know what you think! That will be my next Assayas, I believe.
Out of the other films I have seen by Olivier Assayas (Carlos, Summer Hours, Boarding Gate), Demonlover most resembles Boarding Gate. They are both thrillers that utilize sex as a metaphor for modern commerce. Assayas shows you all the wheeling and dealing that happens behind the scenes of a deal for the distribution of 3D anime pornography. It's ideas are not as compact as Boarding Gate, nor does it have a central performance as engaging as that of Asia Argento, but Assayas' trademark tight documentary realist style is present.

Ultimately, it's my least favorite of his films, but it is worth a look.

Note: the DVD by Palm does not have very good PQ. it is in the correct aspect ratio though.

I'll definitely give it a shot at some point, but it's not high priority at the moment. You've never seen Clean? I enjoyed it more than Boarding Gate, less than Carlos or Summer Hours.

I still need to see it. Is it available on streaming or did you see it on DVD?
