Default The flaws of Disney direct to video sequels discuss positives and minuses

Since I have had just about enough of people bashing the sequels of Disney movies like the little mermaid in the original movie release thread and no one wants separate threads to bash one movie I am making this as an official thread to bash Disney movie sequels like cinderella 2 or the little mermaid 2. However use reason and logic to explain just exactly why u think the sequels like cinderella 2 suck. Explain in full details and if u liked the movies explain why in full details.

Positives: Good medicine for insomnia.

Negatives: They exist. And Quasimodo gets a girlfriend.

In fact, here's the Nostalgia Chick's take on them:

There are no good direct-to-DVD cheapquels.

Not...one.

Please be more specific when listing negatives and ur positive is really a negative opinion based comment like when u say they are good for not being able to sleep is just more hatred.

Some positives
In cinderella 3 the step sisters finally get fleshed out as full characters a tasks gets her redemption.
The return of jafar Jafar is finally destroyed once and for all we all knew a lamp could not hold him plus Iago who never really was truly evil gets his redemption.

I loved The Return Of Jafar.

The Lion King 2 was the worst!

I must be the only one that actually liked Lion King 2.

I mean I was 8 when it came out... but I actually did like it and the songs on there.

I literally haven't seen a single direct to DVD/Blu Disney film. I enjoy/love every single animated theatrical release outside maybe 2 or 3 films, and I am afraid that they'll tarnish my opinion of the original movie. I'm sure there are a few decent ones, but I figure why bother.

Not many of the sequels are that good but i did enjoy Simba's Pride and Lilo & Stitch 2.

Lion King 2
Pros: songs that are almost as great as the originals
More great comedy from Timon and Pumbaa
Kovu is awesome :P
Simba's struggle as a parent

Cons: Romeo and Juliet just seems simple compared to Hamlet
It didn't have that same "danger" feeling that the first 1 did. E.g. Elephant graveyard chase, stampede, battle on Pride Rock. The 2nd had these type of fights but the feeling was just missing...

Lilo & Stitch 2
Pros: like the first one it made you feel so sorry for Stitch. You could actually cry at this film if you're not careful!
The humour was just as good
Decent plot
L&S i find has a different look to it compared to other Disney films. I looked just like the first which i think helps familiarise your mind. (sets you in the same world)
Unlike a lot of the sequels, they managed to get a lot of the main cast back. Although they couldn't get Daveigh Chase back i thought Dakota Fanning did a pretty convincing job.

Cons: Apart from overall not being better the original i can't really think of a reason to hate on this film

Thank you groge511 your comments are exactly the type I meant for when discussing Disney direct to video sequels. While its true a lot of the sequels midquells prequels are pure crap there are some that are almost as good as the original like cinderella 3 LILO and stitch 2 the lion king sequels personally I like 1 and a half better than number 2.

I am not against sequels, but I feel that sequels should only be made by Feature Animation rather than DisneyToon. After all, DisneyToon made sequels, while a few have been interesting to watch, can't be compared to the original.

The title of this thread should rather be The Flaws of DisneyToon Sequels since some were actually released theatrically such as The Jungle Book 2, The Tigger Movie, etc. While I understand they were released in theaters due to their higher appeal, if it is not one of the Disney Animation Studios movies, it doesn't have the same quality.

I haven't really watched a ton of their direct to dvd sequels but the one complaint I keep hearing is the story. I think they don't develop good stories for the dvd sequels and that is why people don't like them. look at Toy Story 2 - it was supposed to go direct to dvd but the story was so good, they released it in theatres. I think if they worked on the story more, these would work better. plus the fact, and this is for all studios, that direct to dvd is associated with bad movies. there have been rumors that it would happen but no studio had really started focusing on releasing direct to dvd movies like they do theatrical movies - a movie or 2 every month with decent budgets and names people actually recognise. if direct to dvd was seen as an actual way to release films, say like Netflix or iTunes is, and not as a place to dump bad movies, then these types of movies might start to improve.

I actually don't have that big of a problem with them. I own them for completion of the collection and for my future children. I think a lot of times we forget that while the originals were aimed at families and can appeal to broad audiences the sequels are directly aimed at children. The entire point is to satisfy your child who wants to see more of the story. While at times they can be ridiculous and terrible, I try to view them as a separate entity from the original rather than degrading the original.

A few of my favorites:
Cinderella III
Return of Jafar/King of Thieves
Belle's Enchanted Christmas

I think Cinderella III does a really nice job of adding to Cinderella, in a way that II did not. The concept is good, the animation is nice and it's an enjoyable little movie.

The Aladdin sequels are more of a fond memory and I haven't seen them in decades so I have no true comment on them.

I have ALWAYS adored Belle's Enchanted Christmas. It's paced well, fits with BaTB nicely, and gives me the warm and fuzzies.

I haven't seen enough of them (although I own several with the combo packs) to really have a large list of dislikes. I will say that Brother Bear II had an okay plot and nice animation, but the voice actors were TERRIBLE. Patrick Dempsey came in as Kenai and while he tries hard, he does not capture the original character. And Mandy Moore - no. No.

I'd say the biggest flaw was that they were extremely transparent cash-ins. A lot of the time they were simply telling the same stories over again (Little Mermaid 2, Lady and the Tramp 2), having the characters re-learn lessons that the experienced in the first movie (Both Aladdins, Simba's Pride, both Beauty and the Beasts), or was just trash (Fox and the Hound 2, Belle's Magical World, Hunchback 2).

A lot of Disney fans (myself include) gets up in arms over them because they did legitimately hurt the image of the company and was just a creative lowpoint for them.

No worries! Yeah I never mentioned 1 & 1/2 or 3 or Hakuna Matata or whatever you want to call it :P but i think i do prefer it to Simba's Pride (or 2 if you prefer to call it that!)

I hate it when they change the name for no reason.
It's like "Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch has a glitch"
It's not even called that!

This. It's the tendency to create sub-par sequels because there's an established audience, and often the projects are rushed and unoriginal, that ruins it for me. Disney aren't the only company who do it, of course, but their direct-to-dvd output is probably the most disappointing since the originals are always incredible.
