Question asked by HD DVD fans at the beginning of the year: Why has Universal stopped releasing?

Amir answers: I gave my people time off.

You should also ask him why he thinks Samsung made this announcement so ridiculously early before the debut of their component.

I would love to hear his comment .

Keep an eye out tomorrow evening.
I think I’ll post my impressions of the new master of The Guns of Navarone simultaneously here and on “that other forum”, as I promised those folks there that I would do so.

It sure is nice to visit a harassment free zone.

I was thinking about that! It seems pretty early to me.

I'm wondering if it has to do with a certain faction of the BD companies wanting to put "pressure" on those within the BDA who are responsible for such things as interactivity, replication capacity, etc

To me, this move by Samsung and the recent move by WB seem to be "shots across the bow", as if to say, "We won't hesitate to part ways if you cannot deliver". I could be totally wrong though.

BTW, welcome Penton-Man. I suspect you'll find things a lot "better" around here (no Rueben sandwiches ).

The term "pressure" is correct but, I think you've got the origin of it incorrect.

I'm eager to hear what you have to say about Guns as it turns out it's one of my best friend's favorite films and mentioning to him that it was a Blu-ray title was one of the factors that made him decide to get a Blu-ray player for his birthday this weekend

*puts another US$2 in the coffer*

Can the BD studios start educating the BD users right away about OAR?

The problem is still small right now but we did see a huge SPIKE when the PS3 launched. Currently most of the non 16x9 BD movies (well technically they are 1.85:1 instead of 1.78:1) are in 2.39:1 but there will come a time when Academy standard ratio films be released.

So on top of/instead of the "Piracy is stealing" video some BD has, BD studios can start making an informative yet funny (the only way to get people to watch it) shorts about the difference between OAR and the Pan-n-scan/HBO-HD versions.

Honestly, I don’t know……and in this case I am just speculating as I have no contacts at Samsung. That’s why I encouraged Jazar to ask paidgeek this relevant question. I hope the geekster can be as candid as possible without breaching any confidences of trust with the people in the consumer electronics world.

But it’s a natural fact that there are only two corporate entities that wield enough power to cause……. or strongly encourage Samsung to announce so early. Sure Joe Kane works for them now (is there ANYBODY ole Joe hasn’t worked for?) but as an individual I highly doubt that he would be so influential in the timing of a new policy announcement.

In my eyes, what smells about this is not so much what they decided to do but, how early in the year they decided to announce it. Somebody felt the urgent need for some good news and it certainly isn’t Samsung that is in dire need of it.

Default The Guns of Navarone gets a new transfer !

Regarding Guns................

The master looks very good.

Sure, the feature is grainy(heads-up for those anti-grain zealots) and not sharply focused but, hell so is the camera negative.

When it does get thru the Blu-ray encoding stage, it should definitely be a grade superior to that of the Superbit version. I have confidence in Sony and their technology.

I don’t know when it will appear on Sony’s schedule, you’ll have to ask the paidgeek about that.
All I do know is, nothing much better could have been done with the original source regarding DRS (dirt and scratch removal) and it is a definite improvement resulting in a superior master.

People, keep in mind the studios ….any of the studios aren’t forced to do new transfers, this is a commitment to quality which involves an expenditure of resources. I just wish they would have the same commitment to quality with the grade of toilet paper they have in their bathrooms ---- that goes for all the studios. It sure would have helped with a recent case of non-neutrality news-induced diarrhea (coming from Uni) suffered by moi this morning.

Also……….. in regards to the consumer video codec nonsense that some on AVS seem to imply is of overridingly paramount importance (due to the on-going advertisement campaign presence on the Insider’s Thread there), for this particular title, I don’t know and I don’t care what it will be on Blu-ray --as long as it is NOT bit-starved. (I’m a Fraunhofer research Institute fanboy myself that gets aroused over the JPEG2000 codec rather than the low-bitrate consumer codecs)

Be that as it may, if I were to venture a guess, I imagine you’ll be seeing this title in AVC (on BD50).

Penton Man, thanks for the comments regarding Guns. I'm a big fan of that movie (heck, it even as one of the same actors that appeared in my beloved Lawrence)!

Couldn't agree with your more regarding codecs used vs bit starving!

All this does is irritate people by making us sit through an unskippable 'warning' on disc that we have bough legitimately and calling all of us thieves.
I couldn't agree more. It's awful and it pisses me off having to watch it and not being able to skip it.

thanks PM. Good to have you on here. With PG here too (much appreciated), there is very little need to visit the MS-billboard that used to be the AVS insiders' thread.

Well, hopefully paidgeek, PM, and talkstr8t will still keep em honest over there. It's important for 'balanced' discussion in the insider's thread over there, since you know Amir & Co. would be completely out of control if they knew people from the BD side weren't keeping them honest.

Exactly right.

It's bad enough as it is. Can you imagine what it would be like without those mentioned above contributing?

Yes, we all appreciate it. It's good to have knowledgable insiders keeping the bad guys in check.

totally, we need the BD insider-presence on AVS.

What I meant was that there is no need for moi to visit AVS and sit through pages of MS-adverts to find relevant BD insider info, since all the insiders are now here.
