I have some dirty confessions:
[Show spoiler]
  1. I think Alley is a good actress
  2. I love In The Mouth of Madness and Ghosts of Mars as much as any other of my favorite Carpenter films
  3. I hate Prince of Darkness (but I am willing to give it another chance with the upcoming blu-ray, even though I really freakin hate it)

Please dont hate me, Cruel World...

I definitely feel so. Then again, I haven't seen Memoirs of an Invisible Man. Ghosts of Mars is easily his worst, although Escape from LA wastes a great cast with a lame script and awful CGI. The Ward was competent if anonymous, and ultimately completely forgettable.

I'd say that ITMOM is one of Carpenter's most liked films, but then again what pre-96 film isn't (aside from those who dont like Village).

She's perfectly serviceable, but bland, rote, and, like Reeve, wholly lacking in the sardonic charisma that one expects from leads in a Carpenter film.

Other than The Thing and perhaps Halloween, I think Mouth is the best thing he's ever done. Absolutely brilliant.

Memoirs wasn't bad. But he clearly didn't care and just did it to get ITMOM made. It's your standard Chevy Chase film. He's alright, I guess. The effects were great though. Funny how this, which he didn't care about had better effects than L.A.

Also, I thought that the ending of L.A. was great. By far the best part.

I agree with this. Mouth is a truly frightening film actually.

On a new, and odd note...

I just watched a documentary On Demand called "Room 237", about The Shining and all of the insane theories behind his inspiration for completely changing Stephen Kings book.

It made me re-watch The Shining immediately after. I look at it in a whole new light. Its really interesting, although Im not sure I buy into the oober-crazy conspiracy's like the Illuminati and Eyes Wide Shut. There is also stuff in there about him allegedly filming Apollo 11 and making an allegory to the Native American ethnic cleansing in North America. Its wild.

It is really interesting and I certainly recommend checking it out.

I absolutely hated Room 237. Mental Masturbation of the lowest order.

I liked it, although like a sane person which everyone else in this thread seems to be, I found most of it preposterous. It did entertain me for the length of the documentary. Won a huge amount of awards as well, I might add.

I was always under the impression that people hated it... Jeez. You should hear how some people bash it. I thought I was the only one who loved it...

Weird. Of Carpenter's post They Live films, it's my favorite although I do really like the much maligned Escape From LA too.

I wouldn't call it a favorite Carpenter, but I did like it and would welcome a Scream Factory edition.

Don't worry, In The Mouth Of Madness is one of my favorites, and I found Prince Of Darkness boring and annoying.

lots of posts either predicting release or saying how much they love PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS and SHOCKER...

I've always thought those flicks were pretty weak...

The Sentinel, Cat People, Ghost Story, Dracula, Serpent And The Rainbow would be much better titles..... imo of course

I think both of those titles are the last really good flicks that Carpenter made....

yep, I'd pretty much agree with all of that.... haven't ever bothered with Memoirs Of An Invisible Man but if I did, I think that one has a good chance of taking the crown for worst Carpenter flick....

Memoirs Of An Invisbile Man is actually not a bad movie. Chevy Chase, although far from the greatest casting choice for the role, isn't playing his usual funnyman persona and gives a fairly serious performance. I love Sam Neill in just about anything he does and thought he was great as the villainous government agent. It may be one of Carpenter's weakest and most commercially-geared films (although I like it more than Village of the Damned, which is his worst IMO), but I always have fun watching it.

I've always thought Vampires was unfairly maligned.
