About the 3D conversion per Guillermo del Toro:
Quote:
I asked to start it immediately so we could take the full 40 weeks to do the conversion. As an example, ‘Titanic’ took about 50 weeks to convert.....................

an extra budget, which is considerable, to actually have ILM composite the shots that are CG native 3D. We’re not giving elements. ILM is giving the composite in 3D from the get-go. That’s a huge, huge element.

I was reading about this earlier on IMDB. Glad it's 3d, the story seemed a little bland so the 3d experience may intensify the overall.

Thanks for posting the info

Thumbs up

This sounds good and I'm glad to hear they're using hybrid 3D (use of CGI 3D with converted 2D to 3D live action) as seen with Avengers' 3D for example.

The main concern about the 3D for such a large scale? If they go for a human eyes 3D vision, larger objects barely look 3D being so far away (see the flatter scenery shots in Avatar, Prometheus 3D for examples). The hope is, they amped up the 3D so every shot with the giant robots and monsters has strong 3D.

This is on my must see list for 2013 in 3D.

Gotta see this in IMAX! It's gonna rock.

I grew up watching Godzilla and Johnny Sokko & His Flying Robot, so I'm pumped up for this one.

This is an excellent point, I wonder how good the robots will look in 3D considering their size.

Yeah, this is a case of stepping outside the boundary of 3D realism and go for 3D depth in every shot with the giants, even at the cost of "miniaturizing the scale" of the giants by giving them stronger 3D. In other words, you'd have to be almost a giant yourself (as the 3D cameras), with wider eye distance to be able to see strong 3D for the giants.

A elephant's wide eye stereo 3D view versus a tiny insects'. The elephant's eyes offering stronger 3D.

I think they'll go with strong 3d all the way. Stereo D's movies have consistently had strong 3d depth throughout and based off of complaints in the forums about shallow 3d, I honestly think Hollywood, either through our intervention or not, has learned that people expect strong and dazzling depth in 3d movies, and have learned that in a relatively short time span imo

Stereo D is converting, that's good to hear, thanks.
That's true, weak 3D is pretty much pointless 3D (more like 2D) and a big reason 3D gets a lot of flak from non 3D fans over the years, if that was their limited experience with 3D (see Clash of the Titans 3D following Avatar 3D in theaters).

The previews weren't in 3D in theaters so far, but here's hoping for a great conversion for Pacific Rim. With Del Toro being behind this (Blade 2, Pans Labyrinth, Hellboy II), I'm looking forward to Pacific Rim 3D, knowing very little about it beyond giant monsters fighting giant robots.

EDIT: Caught the newer Pacific Rim 2D trailer today in theaters. It looks interesting, but they need to show more about the storyline. In the trailers, we really only know "Monsters attack, defend with robots." That's about it. I did notice Hellboy's Ron Pearlman is in it, but he didn't have a line in the trailer.
I saw it before After Earth, so it was still in 2D. I wonder if this new trailer is also shown in 3D for 3D movies yet?

I wonder if a movie about giant robots and monsters will appeal to enough women to give it a good earning in theaters and home video?

My guess is that we'll finally get a 3d trailer with Man of Steel *fingers crossed*

Here's hoping it delivers plenty of cool action. For a preview of sorts, watch Hellboy II. Del Toro, the director of Pacific Rim and Hellboy II, has a cool scene where a giant green monster attacks the city and it's up to Hellboy to stop it.

Anyone seen the 3D trailer yet?

I think they won't dimensionalize the giant robots much and they will make all of the foreground objects stick out of the screen to emphasize the size/scale.

I forgot about the smaller foreground people looking up at the giants. When it's just Giant vs Giant though, I hope they go all out for the 3D.

That 3D team did a respectable job with Jack the Giant Slayer's 3D giants and people.

The first trailer I saw for this a few months back didn't blow me away but the one before MoS was great. I'll be going to see this for sure.

Cool. Glad to hear it.

Guillermo Del Toro is an awesome director of action, as seen in Blade 2, Hellboy, and the incredible martial arts action of Hellboy 2. With those films in mind, can't wait to see what he does here. Ron Pearlman is here also, and hopefully back for a rumored Hellboy 3 in 3D soon.

Not only is Ron Pearlman in this but Charlie Hunnam is one of the main stars as well. So we got some Sons of Anarchy casting going on.

I saw the 3D trailer for Pacific Rim today when I went to see Man of Steel 3d. The 3D looks awesome for Pacific Rim which compliments a film that looks to be a feast for the eyes even in 2d. I'm excited for this one along with Despicable Me 2.

Nice. This is is very promising, though it'll be a tougher sell to get more women to see a movie about giant monsters battling robots as the main theme in the trailers. But I could be wrong.
