United Kingdom The struggle of New Vs Old

I just wanted to see if anyone else shares the same affliction i do. I currently have around maybe 10-12 Blu-Rays that i haven't seen in my collection.

But every time, meaning well, i walk over to my collection to pick out one of these titles, i end up either watching a title that i've already seen and love, or i stand there for 10 minutes battling to not do that! It's just so much easier to pick up Point Break, Adventureland or for some reason Hot Tub Time Machine (I'm in the minority who love this movie).

It would be ok if i get a lot of time to watch movies, but i have a young son and a daughter on the way so time is sparse for movie watching, therefore i should be picking carefully.

So i hereby make a pledge that from now on, i won't rewatch any Blu in my collection until i've watched all of my unseen titles! You're welcome to join me.

On that note i watched Crazy Heart today for the first time, what a phenomenal film.

I suppose its just easier to choose familiarity and something you know you'll enjoy over an unknown quantity.

HTTM is just so enjoyable to watch! Love the setting and love the performances. Actually really looking forward to the sequel, shame it looks like Cusack won't be returning.

Yeah this does happen a lot. Was doing some work at home yesterday and wanted to put a film on that I hadn't watched in my collection. Ended up watching The Godfather and The Fellowship of the Ring, both of which I've seen at least 20 times

Sometimes it's just the mood you are in. Got some horror titles I've not watched yet but sometimes you just aren't in the mood for that so throw on an old classic instead.

Always have this problem! I have a fair amount of Blu's that need watching, some I've never seen - but I'll end up watching an old favourite I've seen a bunch of times!

Yeah, me too, my collection isn't vast, 80 or so, and approximately 15 of those are still shrink-wrapped and I've never even seen before, but find myself usually putting on Dirty Harry, or Jaws

I set myself a challenge in January to only watch films I'd never seen before. It worked out quite well - some things I watched were disappointing, but I got to see some gems I might have missed if I let myself just watch an old favourite again. I recommend it, if you have the will power to stick to it.

I'm really going to try, my only allowance is that a couple are christmas movies so i'll leave them will November. Apart from that it's all first times. Crazy Heart and Rampart today. One i loved, one i'm nearly finished with and the other i haven't really enjoyed (Rampart)

As I'm trying to watch the equivalent of a film a day for every day of the year (I fell quite a bit short of my target last year), I have a good excuse to watch ones I haven't seen before, and if I have seen them before, it was on DVD. I'm also watching DVDs I've got but not seen as well, where there is no Blu-ray release

Even though I own a lot more DVDs than Blu-rays, I still think that my percentage of unwatched DVDs is slightly more

Currently, that's my main problem. I buy (honestly) too many stuff (or, as my father would say "more hours of video per day than there actually are hours in a day !"). I would say, at some point, the best is just not to care, and watch them anyway.

My worst problem currently is actually spending too much time choosing a movie.

"Ok, so I have about 2 hours, let's check for a movie about 2 hr long, so there are this one and this one, hmmm, no maybe this one instead, not sure, melodrama ? Action ? Let's find some Asian stuff, hmmm, OK let's go for this. Shout ! Now I only have 1h30 left and the movie is 1h55 ! Now, let's find a movie 1h30 long..."

And in the end, I'm like "Screw it, let's just watch an episode of Star Trek TNG"...

I don't have this problem because I make it a rule that I watch any new discs I pick up before anything else in my collection. Stuff doesn't get to go on the shelf until it has been watched, and since I don''t enjoy having my floor cluttered with film cases, it tends to get watched quite quickly. Plus, since I categorise my films by genre, I can't work out which films a new one is most closely related to until I've seen it.

Was going to watch The Silence Of The Lambs tonight, until I saw this post. Watched "Exam" instead. You know, it wasn't half bad

I'm actually pretty close to getting my unwatched titles to under 100 for the first time in about 4 years or so, Actually been watching anything new I have the same day or the next.

It's a struggle.......

It wasn't as good as The Silence of the Lambs though was it?

In all seriousness I think everyone has this problem in varying degrees. Plus we've been burned too many times by glowing reviews for things which turn out to be a load of shit. I'm a bit hesitant watching blind-buys or things I want to love. I'm even reluctant to watch Skyfall and I haven't gone near Captain America, The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises.

Yes! I stand there and just look at all of them. Did this the other night. I could have picked anything and I took the plastic off of my Big Lebowski steelbook and put that in. I have seen it plenty of times, but something drives me to rewatch my favorites. To be fair though, there are not too many unwatched movies on my shelves.
