Yeah, I think it might improve with future viewings, but as I said, it's the bottom of a list of amazing movies - it doesn't make it a bad movie at all.

How'd you manage that? I didn't think it was released until next week.

Nice! Let us know what you think.

On a side note, has anyone watched Band of Outsiders? I've heard mixed things about it but it looks pretty easy and fun.

I'd say it's about middle of the road in terms of 60's Godard, but a great film nonetheless. If you like his work, especially the early 60's stuff, it's worth it.

Watching it right now. Outstanding transfer so far. Object detail is outstanding and very noticeable during the outdoor sequences. Has a lovely later of film grain over the entire film. Haven't gotten to the extras yet.

Just ordered Dazed and Confused. Only others I plan on purchasing are:

- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
- The Game
- Bottle Rocket

It's a very fun movie and easily Godard's most accessible.

Note: Quentin Tarantino named his production company after the film.

How is that Kent Jones/Scorsese supplement with On The Waterfront? Jones is my favorite contributor to the Criterion essays, and Scorsese is such a talented director, I feel like the conversation would be great. I'll probably dig into that supplement before I even rewatch the film once my copy arrives.

More accessible than Breathless?

Just threw in Life Is Sweet. I'll post a review when it's done.

If the film is as good as the menu music (happy and heartwarming) then I think I will love it!

For me, Breathless was a little overrated. I need to revisit it on Hulu and check it out again. I'm interested too to see how Band of Outsiders stacks up.

I think so. But then again my favorite Godard film is 2 or 3 Things I Know about her. So I'm a bit left of center.

Breathless is my second or third favorite film of all time. You may not end up enjoying Band of Outsiders, but there's no harm in giving it a shot.

Honestly my least favorite Godard I've seen, but it's been one I've wanted to reevaluate for some time, along with Made in USA. I will admit, I think I was a couple beers deep when I tried to watch the former, which may have been why it didn't click.

I think it's just so cryptic and really politically charged. I have not yet ventured into 70's Godard, but I have a feeling I would probably like it based on the direction his films were heading in the late 60's.

The only post-60's Godard I've given a chance was Tout Va Bien, which was well before I even got into his later 60's work. I have a really strong interest in his "Second Wave" work from 79-88, though I haven't jumped in yet.

Yup. The two upcoming Olive releases will definitely make me want to dive in sooner:

While we're on Godard, Weekend is perhaps the most notable case of me absolutely loving the first 2/3 of a film, than watching in stunned disappointment as it crashed and burned in its 3rd act.

[Show spoiler]I think ending after the couple flees the village would've been a troubling yet perfectly absurd conclusion to show the indifference of the couple, and the sight of the dead dog resulted in shocked laughter for me.

Then the cult kidnaps them.

Not being well-versed in French political history, I was nevertheless thrilled by the style of the film's previous political rants. Perhaps this was Godard's intent, but I felt increasingly restless and irritated the longer the leader's manifesto and the soundtrack's incessant drumming went on.

Perhaps I'll revisit it on Hulu soon, but I don't know. I may pick up the Blu-ray someday, and just turn it off at "my" ending.

I don't know. Perhaps I'm just more comfortable with the idea of the humanity in urban survival than I am with the idea of rural cult brainwashing.
