Australia Star Trek Into Darkness (September 18, 2013)

Paramount has announced Star Trek Into Darkness for release on September 18, 2013.

Currently they have two versions planned: a 2-disc Double Play and a 3-disc Superset (presumably 3D). No art as of yet.

EDIT: Art has been released. Below are the database listings.

Great movie, very entertaining. Definitely can't wait to watch it on the home cinema.

I do agree with some of the bad press/reviews though, I hope that the 3rd film has more of a plot that involves space travel / exploration which is what Star Trek is really all about isn't it?

LordCrumb: While I don't disagree with the sentiment and love the exploration of big issues I think a lot of people jump on the "JJ's Trek just has cool explosions!" bandwagon and overlook what actually is in there.

I thought Trek '09 was very much about aspiring to be more than what you are, whether that be where you're from, what your genetic makeup is or what experiences you've had. Kirk, Spock and the crew choose to aspire to be more, Nero aspires for nothing more than revenge. At it's basest that's very Trek-like.

Star Trek Into Darkness also has very Trek-like themes. The main theme built on throughout the film is the notion that the "good guys" make the right decision regardless of whether it's easy or not. That's central to Kirk's journey (his early interactions with Spock and Scotty are vastly different to his choices in the end) and is juxtaposed against
[Show spoiler]Admiral Marcus'
journey which is basically taking the easy way out -
[Show spoiler]reawaken Khan
and get him to do all the dirty work.

They may not be tackling slavery, racism (though this was touched on in Star Trek '09) or other "big" issues but they are both very much about hope and making the choice to be better whether it's the easy option or not. That's very Roddenberry-like.

Films don't last so long in release these days, now that every chain has every film (mainstream ones, anyway), but I'm still surprised at how quickly this is closing. My local Readings has had it as MOTW (reduced ticket prices) for the last week; even though it was a daytime session when I went, I was quite surprised there were a whole two of us in the cinema.

[Parenthetical comment: what is it about empty cinemas that makes people want to cluster together? The other bloke, out of the whole cinema, decided to sit in the seat dead in front of me — and I wasn't even sitting in the middle of the row. Then, as the film started, he decided to move ... to the seat immediately behind me. And proceeded to cough, without covering his mouth, right throughout the session. Yes, I then had to move, myself. ]

My impression, from the end of Into Darkness, was that they were quite openly saying, "OK, we've finished with the establishment stories, next time we'll have some traditional Star Trek."

At least, I hope they were.

i'd agree, they are on there 5 year mission of exploration now, even retrofitted the enterprise with new impulse drive just for the venture..

I will say I am glad that one potential reference was not used
[Show spoiler] and that was quoting the shat on either "Out There Thatta way" or
"second star on the right and straight on till morning" when I first saw Spock deffer to kirks wisdom I was thinking, "no, don't you dare say it!!"

and yay locked in and looking forward to it!.

I think I was one of the few people who did not think much of it, it was alright, but nothing special for me, I'd give it a 6/10

Looks like we're getting the same artwork as the US:

A shame that the two best pieces of art for the film (in my opinion) haven't been used.

Oh the Imax poster in Steel form would solve me instantly, my favourite trek poster I reckon. (Vengeance chasing the Enterprise)

However, the one on the right looks a bit different unless the last veiwing I saw was still uncomfirmed, It had the typical triangular composition with Kirk a top Spock and Uhura either side with Khan in the middle.

EDIT ** Haha that link shows the version you posted only in DVD form

Sorry, should have mentioned we got the same for 3D.

As for poster, yes, the Pursuit one should have been used. Would have perfectly countered the theatrical art for the first film (had we actually got THAT as well). Here's what took me a whole 2 mins (literally!) to whip up:

Now I know I made it but personally I think that whoops the pants off the actual one and hey, no effort required Paramount guys - the artwork was already made up!

And yet neither of them have the 3D version. Just stupid to not have one be a 3D release.

Both steels look great, but really annoyed that it doesn't have the 3D version also. Considering what they typically charge for the steels here.
