This skirts the edge of the acceptable non-Criterion subject matter that is faintly associated with past Criterion films, but I need to pitch it here...

All of you who are fans of the Criterion titles, Two-Lane Blacktop, Easy Rider, and Straw Dogs, need to check this out...

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974) features Peter Fonda (Easy Rider) and Susan George (Straw Dogs) in one of the most fun car chase movies ever made. This one is fast-paced, relentless, and visually astounding.

The main attraction of this set for me, however, is...

Race with the Devil (1975) features Peter Fonda (Easy Rider) and Warren Oates (Two-Lane Blacktop) as friends who are vacationing in Colorado with their wives when they encounter a dangerous Satanic cult performing a human sacrifice ritual. When the cult spots the onlookers, chaos ensues in the form of a series of repeated attacks and awesome car chases. This is a wondrous horror film that would have worked well as a stand-alone Criterion title.

These two movies make for an awesome weekend if you pair them up with Easy Rider and Two-Lane Blacktop. Trust me on this one.

I bought this 2-movie set on DVD a couple of years ago almost to this day, but am jumping at the chance to have it on Blu-ray.

I ordered Dirty Mary Crazy Larry/Race with the Devil and Earthquake together on Amazon today to take advantage of the free shipping. It's a tight month for me, but these movies take precedence even over the current Criterion sale.

Yojimbo isn't, but is worth seeing. In Japan, it may be considered Kurosawa's best work. It was copied by Sergio Leone's "Fistful of Dollars." Kurosawa sued Leone and got a cut of Fistful's international box office and may have made more money from Leone's film than he made from all of his own films.

added: "Yojimbo" (and "Sanjuro") are widescreen, so they're more "modern." I don't know why Criterion calls "Sanjuro" a "sly companion piece to 'Yojimbo.'" It wouldn't be surprising to hear someone say that "Sanjuro" is a samurai comedy.

Nice! I haven't seen either but looked up Race with the Devil a few years back when I rewatched The 'Burbs and did a little research to find out what movies Tom Hanks' character was watching in once scene in the film. I have been itching to see it since. Look forward to your review when you get this.

Another unrelated Criterion note, I ordered Vanishing Point, I've never seen it, but it looks like an awesome car chase movie from the same era.

With remarkable storytelling economy and thrilling action scenes, this is an expertly mounted tale of revenge and loyalty.

Vanishing Point is excellent. While I prefer the above-mentioned movies, I did enjoy watching Vanishing Point on DVD, and I would not mind owning it on Blu-ray. Someday...

My criterions from this sale:

videodrome
Qatsi trilogy
The Thin Red Line

Solaris

Thinking of getting one more criterion: Godzilla or 12 Angry Men (never seen), or something else ( I have never seen any of the other criterion titles)
Kino currently has the US rights to Stalker and The Mirror as far as I know because they have in-print DVD's available. The only Tarkovsky they have released on blu-ray so far is The Sacrifice.

.

I too prefer Harakiri to Seven Samurai. Sansho the Bailiff is a tragedy in the same vein and shouldn't dissapoint if you are looking for something more dramatic.

I actually haven't seen any of his other films, despite owning Naked.

From what I've seen thus far, I didn't find it quite funny, nor did I find it making much sense. I mean I guess this dysfunctional family is struggling with who and what they are, but the execution just seems a little too lazy to me.

Mm good luck with Antichrist...another one I watched once and probably wouldn't again. Parts of it reminded me of Paranormal Activity 4 though!

Speaking of Antichrist, this is a very funny read (don't read unless you've seen the movie): http://film-dot-com.tumblr.com/post/...saw-antichrist

Is Antichrist scary or just disgusting? Or both?

It's very atmospheric and pretty disgusting. We can provide spoilers if you want, but I will say this, it involves graphic nudity.

There's one pretty scary moment, but most of my distaste is from how graphic the violence was. That's the point, I get it, that these people have become seriously disturbed, but that doesn't mean I wanna see it again haha.
