It is a very good WWII movie. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in war/history movies. Like I stated in the previous page, the PQ on this release is tops .

But no CGI which makes me VERY happy. Ah la Red Tails.

.
I have a audio question for the ones who have watched this already.

I used to watch this all the time on TV going way back to the late 70's. And I remember that during the start of the attack on Midway Island one of the Marine pilots draws first blood by shooting down a Japanese plane, and yells over his radio something along the lines of- "I got him! And he's smoking/flaming all the way down!"

In the DVD and later recent TV versions this line was omitted from the movie. Was it included in this Blu-ray version, or left out again also.

Thanks.

.

Thanks for the reviews on the PQ guys. I've only seen this on Netflix streaming, but really liked it. Looking forward to getting this.

My unofficial review:

5/5 picture - As good as any PQ I've seen from movies that old, nice contrast, blacks are black, no edge enhancement, nice grain
4.5/5 sound - The Collector's Edition only had a Dolby Digital 1.0 soundtrack, this now has a DTS-HD soundtrack labeled as:

Includes the SD features that were in the Collectors Edition DVD.

I watched it last night and was very happy with the picture quality. Much better than the Great Escape. The audio was a bit lacking, but not enough that I didn't enjoy the movie. Good upgrade in terms of video presentation now that Midway is out on bluray.

In some ways I like this movie and in others I dont. What bothers me is they call the F6F Hellcat the F4F Wildcat which is totally wrong. The F6F didnt participate in the Midway Battle, the F4F did but not the Hellcat. I am a big Hellcat fan so this is something I noticed right away. I did like the Hellcat footage though Second I thought the acting by Heston was over blown and his bratty kid irritated me. When they do release it I hope they release it with the tv cut which I enjoyed better then the original release.

Yes, they screwed up Hellcat with Wildcat. I would think something like that may have been because it sounded better.

As pointed out in the documentary included, they used lots of film stock from WWII. What happened in those scenes was more important than what type of equipment was in it. For instance, the crash scene of Charlton Heston at the end of the movie is the wrong type of plane. They spent $60k on archive footage. When the studio got the bill they balked. Then the guy that put all these scenes together from the archive shows them a clip and asked them, "How much would it cost to film that scene?" and they quickly agreed that $60K was a bargain.

The part with Heston's son was put in to bring to light to the audience of the 70s the shameful actions of the US government of putting Japanese Americans in concentration camps with no reason other than their race. Yeah, its hokey, but showed that the US Government wasn't perfect and many had no idea this happened 30 years before.

The only part included in the extras of the Blu-ray, of the 40 minutes added for the TV version is the 10 minutes of the Heston scenes with his girlfriend, none of the battle scenes. They couldn't make a decent extended version of the movie unless it was in Pan and Scan because the TV part was filmed in a different aspect ratio.

Why would you do two pre-orders? Especially since Amazon has a preorder guarantee that means you get the lowest price for the movie between the date you order and release date.

What? Blu Titan, why didn't you just cancel one of the preorders? Did you forget you did an origanal preorder? I did that once with one of the Dexter seasons.

I agree, though the audio moments that impressed me was when the huge warships would fire their canons - they had great oomph.

this was my first time seeing the movie and while I thought the cast was great, the integration of the stock footage pulled me out of the scenes. And of course it didn't help with the line "say it to my face goddamn it' had me howling with laughter.

George Gay (Ens.), the only survivor of the Hornet's VT8 Squadron apparently had an advanced cloaking device on his TBD Devastator that worked much better than the torpedo release mechanism. " During the scene when Torpedo Eight squadron is slaughtered during its attack on Nagumo's carriers, Ensign George Gay's aircraft changes appearance several times.
[Show spoiler] This is due to the different snippets of wartime footage being cobbled together.
When the squadron commences its attack, his plane is a Vindicator. When his plane is the last one left, it has changed into an SBD Dauntless. When Gay's plane has been hit and is diving towards the sea, it has become an Avenger. Finally, when his aircraft hits the water, it has become a Hellcat." (Movie Mistakes)

I think you have to give MIDWAY a bit of slack, to the degree that it was made in 1976. They simply had to make due with what they had (much like how Patton tanks were used as nazi tanks in BATTLE OF THE BULGE). In the 1980's they could do models, and nowadays they can do CGI. Back then, they were damn near having to MacGyver movies like this together.

So yeah, the F6F is "supposed" to be a F4F, just like those Patton tanks in BOTB are supposed to be Tigers (hey, at least KELLY'S HEROES tried with the wood paneling over the Sherman tanks used for the 3 Tigers in the town).

That bit with the Vindicator-Dauntless-Avenger-F6F is pretty funny though.
