I don't usually go this far when someone has a differing opinion from my own, but... my friend said he thinks the series hit an all-time low with the finale of Season 2 (and mocks the writers for thinking they're clever with all their foreshadowing in the finale episode), and Season 3 was boring and not satisfying at all, and now he has been holding off continuing the series since then.
Haha, I have a friend who didn't even make it that far. I kept telling him how great the show is and all that and after a few weeks I've asked him if he'd watched it and he told me he saw the first two seasons and he had this 'meh' look on his face. To this day he didn't told me why he didn't actually liked it, except that he hated Skyler lol. It baffles me since he's a fan of shows I also love, like The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, etc.

Agreed - season 2, to me, is perfectly constructed and is still my favourite, despite what the rest of the series went on to accomplish. Gilligan has said that season 2 was the only one planned out from beginning to end at the start and it shows (not a knock against the others, just at how tight season 2 is).

Apart from that I couldn't even begin to rank them. I tried but, everytime I put one season below another, I remember a moment from it that changes my mind. Really, they're all incredible. And I have no doubt that the final 8 are going to repeatedly kick us in the gut in the best way possible.

I think Season 2 is the worst.

Granted I've just got Season 1 on Blu and pretty dreading it, considering the changes the series has gone through (and how good it has gotten over the years) but in all honest it had a lot of heavy lifting. Season 2 beat around the bush a little too much and got into a mundane routine of one episode is them getting into a sticky situation, the next will be them getting out of a stick situation, then the next would be them dealing with the repercussions and then business as usual, until the end of the episode had a cliffhanger involving the next sticky situation. Plus the whole lying to Skylar and the cancer kicking in really started to wear thin.

Season 3 they challenged the structure and it paid off, they built a larger world around the characters, they broke the convention of lying the family and gave Walter a good reason to get out, yet ignored, and it gave him a good reason to get back in. And Season 4 is the best simply because everyone loves the fall of an empire, and with Walter's credibility spiralling out of control, the shows unpredictable and tense nature really took center stage as he brought down the whole of Gus' empire with him.

Season 5 couldn't follow the perfection of 4, which to be fair was a very tall order, but the show's ability to continue after that finale was pretty brilliant, leaving Walter to his own abilities was a good call, and having him slowly take out the thorns out of his sides as he went along was riveting to watch, which made it all the more worthwhile as he went along more clueless to his monstrosities. It's a shame the season was so rushed, I would of loved to see an extra episode showing him coping with the empire he built before he managed to "get out", and the rush nature of the season is what brings the season down ultimately, but I think it's on par with (if not better than) season 3 just due to the untamed nature on Walter and the direction they managed to take, because after season 4 I would of hit a complete dead end on this show if I was in charge.

Ranking:
  1. Season 4
  2. Season 3
  3. Season 5
  4. Season 2
  5. Season 1

If Season 6 hits between Season 5 and 3, I'd be pretty happy with calling this the best TV series I've ever seen.

S2 is absolutely better than S1, S3 is absolutely better than S2. I'm pretty sure I like S4 better than S3, but I'm not 100% certain. Both are friggin awesome and better than S2.

I'll wait until S5 is over for real before I rank it anywhere.

The show is already one of the best of all-time, but if season 5 (or 6) final episodes manage to be held up to the same level as previous, it could be in talks for the best series of all-time.

It's time to find out if teacher-turned-meth maker Walter White (Bryan Cranston) will pay for the multitude of sins that he has committed over five dark and harrowing seasons. Series creator Vince Gilligan reveals that he and his writers have ''saved the best stuff 'til last,'' and that there's no rest for the wicked. ''I have surprised myself at how much story there was left to tell and how quickly we tell it,'' he says. ''You need to really settle down on the couch and pay close attention because it's going to come at you fast and furious in the final eight episodes.'' (AMC, Aug. 11)

My Rankings:

1. S3
2. S2
3. S4
4. S1

Loved them all, the first part of S5 needs a rewatch if I was to rank it properly

On a unrelated note, gone back through Season 1 over last week and started Season 2 today.

Season 1's issues are far more glaring now that I've seen where the show heads. It plays the darkly comedic side of it's premise a lot more on the collar than I originally saw. But I watched the first episode of Season 2 today and the whole Walt/Skylar dynamic is very -y, I don't know whether it's the fact I know where this all heads or the fact that the show does a good job of showing Skylar's disapproval of Walt's lies.
