You can get some character connection if you play it off as him being Kal-El and living life as Kal-El, an alien on Earth who is working to preserve his alien culture as the last of his kind, but when you say he is "Superman", is always "Superman", and only does "Superman" things, then that cuts off the [philosophical] humanity of the character. Ironically, it brings it a bit closer to the nihilistic core that the "Overman" concept originally sprung from. And that means that no one would care about the character.
Not every character in existence has to be "relatable", and all conflict tidied up nicely during a conclusion, or have a cliche "I have strengthened my resolve and can do anything now!!!" moment. That's pretty much the biggest flaw in most Hollywood movies. "Hey this alien is essentially the strongest being in the universe, can do anything....oh but he goes to McDonalds.. Get it? And you go to McDonalds too. That's pretty neat huh"

That's not what he meant by relatable. Superman without Clark would be a pretty shallow movie. Clark's moral compass and HIS(not Superman's) story arc is what makes the whole thing interesting. You don't want a movie where all Superman does is kick ass, do you?

IMO, Returns was amazing and apart from the kid part, I liked how it was a character study on Clark/Superman and what it feels like to be an outsider unable to fit in. And some of the scenes combined with the music are breathtakingly beautiful such as Supe flying towards the Sun in the very end. A scene like that is much more visually breathtaking than any action scene.
That being said, I'm glad to see MOS has a good mix of both.

If you're referring to the action in the movie, good. I was never a fan of Snyder's slow-mo.

Based on the trailers all of the action reminds me of Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds (those huge kryptonian pods with legs) and maybe the Avengers. So I don't know if i'll be immersed into the realism like I was for a lot of Batman Begins. I saw as much realism as possible (while keeping in mind it's 3 flying aliens fighting another one) in something like the Superman II downtown Metropolis fight. I'm interested to see what a huge CGI war will be like for the Superman character.

We don't need to keep giving praise to Donner's films. They're intensely flawed. It was revolutionary once, but Le Voyage dans la Lune was revolutionary once too, but we don't see scifi filmmakers slavishly lifting from it today. The only thing which deserves any direct reverence in a new Superman film is the source material, and it sounds like this film has liberally lifted directly from Birthright and a few other books. That's what we need to see. If they're not delivering something original, it should be something from the comics. We don't need to see them lifting things from the Donner film anymore. Singer tried that already and it failed to deliver everything Superman is capable of delivering.

I agree on all counts, except, I never said he couldn't still be "Clark" or any other identity for that matter. What I'm saying is that, just like Smallville, Metropolis, and some of the characters in it, should be another signpost in his life. I love that Smallville and Lana, etc. will always be a part of him, and the same should be said of Metropolis, Lois, etc. -- But I think the character could move on after all these years, but it's the fear of changing what we know about him that prevents anyone from doing it or accepting it. I love that he doesn't wear red briefs anymore. I love that he has a romance with Wonder Woman instead of Lois. The character has been around for 75 years, so he shouldn't be restricted to the same settings and supporting characters all the time.

Now, I'm speaking mostly about in the comics now -- not the movies or animated shows, because they have to always reestablish for the nonconverted what Superman's history is. But don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily want that "Grounded" crap Straczynski laid on us where Superman walks the Earth like Caine in Kung Fu (or David Banner from The Incredible Hulk TV series). I'm just saying if Clark were to be given a legitimate reason to move on to another city, whether as a new version of Clark, or another identity, it would be interesting to see what writers could do for another couple of decades with a new and different career, location, and supporting cast for the character.

I don't think it is the end. In another trailer or whatever, they show Zod using his laser eyes or whatever.

I watched some of that clip (first clip I have seen from this and I have not seen 1 TV spot and only 1 or 2 of the shorter (I think) trailers)..
And I dont know. One thing is for sure, This is giving me vibes that this will be the Incredible Hulk to Superman Returns' 2003 version of Hulk .
And I liked both Hulks almost equally but Ang Lees Hulk Had better acting and a more compelling story .

Even the look of Hulk (03) and Superman Returns seem similar while this one looks more visually like Incredible Hulk.

And after the clip I remain fully convinced that the box office will fare very similar to Superman Returns (+ another $40 or $50 or whatever it'd be adjusting for inflation)
(I think Superman Returns is pretty damn great though and I hope this Superman movie is too. it sure has a very good cast even though I remain unconvinced about Henry Cavill. I havn't seen one moment of him in this film that I like)

Well, to be fair to Caville, you don't get much acting moments from him in the trailers. Hitchhiking, working, lifting, flying, with an occasional line thrown in. I wasn't impressed with him in immortals, but that was a pretty lame movie.

So, I'm just ready to go in and watch the movie. Hopefully, I see Superman on screen and not an actor playing Superman. We'll find out soon.

Here's the news of the day in regards to box office prediction:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhugh...estic-opening/
Personally, I think that Marvels Phase 1 has helped set the stage for audiences to flock to MoS by breaking down a lot of the barriers plagued by comic book movies. This coupled with an audience that Nolan/Goyer drew in for his Dark Night franchise has people on edge to see what can be done with the 75 year old icon. Not to dismiss Snyder at all, because he is the glue that is going to put all of this on the screen with his action experience and vision. I hope that if it's as good as the trailers suggest; they keep all players in the game for upcoming movies.

My prediction for opening weekend is 180-185 million domestic. I wanted to better guess this, but couldn't confirm the number of screens the MoS would be playing on. So this number is based solely on the known audience out there primed from the Marvel franchise and the brand recognition of the MoS. The reason I don't go with the article figures is because I am impressed with the marketing strategy such as the Wal-Mart blitz and other partnering businesses. I would like to throw the gauntlet down and say bigger opening numbers than The Avengers, but that's a big statement to make. I would however make this claim if Wal-Mart released a statement on how their advance ticket sales are sold out. (I bought those and also plan to take the whole family on Friday afternoon, lol.) Looking forward to next week, it's going to be hard to stop checking this forum every darn hour.

^^^

Don't worry, I don't think many are flocking to see this purely because of Snyder. While his name is on the trailers I don't think that many people really care about what he's done, the main draw is the Nolan-esque look the film has.

Obviously MOS won't make Avengers or Dark Knight Rises money and probably not even $120 million in the first weekend. Superman hasn't been a cool character to movie audiences in 30 years. I went to some of the later Christopher Reeve premieres and they were half full. I doubt it's changed enough to pull in Batman or Avengers money. $80 million would be a great weekend for it. I hope i'm 100% wrong though.
