I'll be buying this but doubt the PQ will be any better than the recent Joseph and Superstar blus...

Thanks for the heads up

Hi,I ordered Joseph, JCS and Cats yesterday. Is there anything wrong with the picture quality of Joseph and JCS? Real HD or not? And did they stretched the image?

I have ordered the Joseph bluray to replace my dvd. While I will admit that the transfer could have been better and I was disappointed that it wasn't digitally restored for bluray, the picture ratio looks correct and is not stretched out for widescreen. The image isn't BAD, it just isn't as AWESOME as I know it COULD be.

I ordered the CATS bluray and it was shipped out today, I should get it next week. I hope it looks good.

I'm not disappointed that I bought Joseph on blu, just disappointed that it wasn't better.

I'm still waiting for Cats to arrive! It was supposed to be delivered at work on Monday but the sorting office seem to have 'forgotten' to deliver any work addressed mail for what is now three days! They apparently have about 4 post sacks full that they have yet to deliver to us...

As soon as I get it (next year?!) I'll post my thoughts on PQ/AQ...pretty sure someone else will beat me to it, though!

I now have Cats on Blu-ray but won't have chance to watch it 'till later. The good news is that on the sleeve it says:

'(It has) now been re-mastered in High-Definition for Blu-ray.'

It also states in the specifications table:

1080p High-Definition Anamorphic Widescreen 1.78:1.

Matt

I've watched it now. The audio is fantastic, as for the video...it is much better than the DVD - but not demo material. I think RUG/Universal have simply taken the video master and transferred it to HD without any digital tinkering. There's plenty of natural grain (which was problematic on the DVD) and detail in close ups. It's true to its (video?) source, as it was not filmed in HD, it is not stellar -its overall look is soft, particularly in long shots but colours are great and the soundtrack is thankfully in sync - I always found the dvd audio to be slightly out. And finally it's anamorphic!

I was quite impressed with it.

Interested in your comments on picture quality as was disappointed by Joseph so have held back on Cats. The two reviews on Amazon are both scathing of the picture.

I really don't know why Universal didn't follow the approach of Eagle Vision with their new SD on BD series like the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. So actually admit these are upscales and push the benefits of lossless audio.

These Lloyd Webber's are surely video not film so the 1080p transfer hey are plugging on the is misleading.

I'll be satisfied if the PQ is better than Joseph. JCS2000 bluray has already satisfied me.

There are a lot of other musical stuff sitting waiting to be released

My favourite would be Les Miserables 10th Anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall. Wasn't this filmed rather than video ? so they could restore as a proper HD BD. There was various logos in the end credits saying it was filmed 16:9 using an EU grant as was still in the days most TV was 4:3, but can't remember if it was shot on film.

There is also Hey, Mr. Producer! The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh, which is similar to the Lloyd Webber Celebration, with obviously some overlap of shows. That was recorded at the Lyceum Theatre in 2005. Plus the DVD is OOP.

The problem though with both of these was that the DVD rights were with 2entertain, and everyone knows how anti they are to BD. At least the Lloyed Webber show is also Universal so a good chance it will apper on BD given the other shows have already been released. Plus the DVD is still in print.

My copy of CATS was suppose to be delivered since last Tuesday...but NOTHING yet. (sigh) I called them and they said give it till the 18th and if nothing shows up, they will send out another one. Can't wait to watch this one.

As for other releases ,I am SO disappointed that they chose to released the newer Jesus Christ Superstar instead of the 2000 version. I have no desire to watch this new modern stage version with all the video on stage effects. I saw clips on YouTube and it looks horrible.

I've SO been hoping for a bluray release of this...

The 2000 version is out in other countries like Germany and Japan from Universal. You can import it.

It's already available. I ordered it from Amazon UK. It's supposedly region free, but I have a region free player, so I can't verify that for you.

OMG, THANK YOU. I had no idea. I just ordered it. I searched for it in here but couldn't find it. Does anyone know how to add it to the database in here?

The quality is better than the DVD (which had terrible artifacts and pixels everywhere) but it's still SD, washed out, hardly more details than the DVD and has a weird grain structure, it has interlacing problems too.
The film was shot on 35mm, a nice high def transfer would be possible.
Anyway, I still love it, wore out the VHS as a kid.
