I never had any intention of buying the Theatrical version of AUJ for the simple reason that i don't think it is fair for those that want decent special features to have to buy the Extended Edition. With that in mind i got hold of a digital copy of the film from a friend (he bought the BD and wasn't bothered about Commentaries etc) which has tided me over until the EE is released. The irony is that i'm not actually bothered by the extended cut. As a huge fan of the book, i was more than satisfied with what we got for the theatrical version. It's the usual slew of outstanding Extra's Jackson will provide that i'm eager to have.

Another missing scene was described last year by a AICN writer who got to be an extra: Bilbo shopping at a Hobbiton market.

Yea, he was there buying that fish that we see him getting ready to eat later on that night.

Yeah, I'm with you. I'm not so sure this movie needs an extended edition. Not because I think it's too long, there are just certain scenes I feel could be cut out and not really affect the story that much. One is the trolls being turned to stone as well as the whole "stone giants" scene. Sure, it looked amazing, but doesn't really add anything to the story. I felt like The Hobbit just became Transformers.
If the EE does add scenes that add to the story, then I'll probably get it.

I have several movies in my collection (Dances With Wolves, for instance) where to me the longer version actually feels shorter and more coherent than the more tightly-edited cinema version. It's not a given, of course, that more footage flows better, but it's also not an automatic situation where a longer cut means a greater sense of passing time, unless you're a clock-watcher anyway. I'm hoping this might be the case, at least to some degree, with The Hobbit — which did suffer, in my opinion, from some awkward editing and occasional sequences that felt more like an interpolation than a progression.

An example for me is the battle of the stone giants, which seemed to come out of nowhere and almost felt as if the film had slipped into a different world. For me, the LotR films felt like they created a large, coherent world, and everything that happened seemed part of that world. The Hobbit had less of a feeling of a coherent world, and more like each ensuing incident was being made up as they went. Maybe — I'm hopiing, anyway — with a chance to flesh the story out a little more, Jackson will be able to make it all feel a little more organic.

I'm surprised we don't have more info about this release yet.

We can probably expect more info and possibly even some kind of preview at SDCC next month.

I hope they release the extended cuts of the next two Hobbit films on time with release instead of waiting...

They won't, but TABA could conceivably come out sooner, perhaps 2015. It's unlikely though.

At first I don't have the interest of getting the non EE version also but since I have not seen it in theatre, I ended up getting the standard (with slip) and digibook versions and i'm also buying the EE once released

Yeah I am just waiting. I saw it in theatres so I can wait until the EE. I only own the EE of the LotR Trilogy so I don't want the regular of this either.

My dear, fellow Tolkienverse fan, for THAT 'ultimate deluxe Middle Earth saga nerdgasm box' you shall wait at least 2 years. Probably more. Will you resist?

*facepalm*

Probably the second most famous scene from the book. You want to remove the Gollum riddles too?

I'll admit that I too thought the Troll sequence ran unnecessarily long. I would never want it removed, but it could've been shortened and still been equally effective.

I thought "The Hobbit" was very good, I'm hoping the EE will be even better, and I'm in even higher hopes that the next two films in the series will be better as well.
