Despite what some might have heard about this release, this was not a terribly distressed Technicolor transfer. And considering what Columbia was up against in trying to restore and remaster it without the original 3-strip negs, I thought it was actually a pretty amazing recovery job. Most 70 year old Technicolor films should be so lucky!

I'm now up to 3 viewings of Cover Girl since last summer, and yes, it's true, there are some variances in picture 'snap' from scene to scene, with a little more grain and contrast than I'm accustomed to from a typical 40s-era studio IB print, and of course, opticals being opticals, you always takes yer chances there, even in Technicolor. On balance though, I thought this was not only a fun, tuneful, cleverly staged movie, but also an overall snazzy looker (in particular, watch Eve Arden in her losing battle with the Costume Dept. to not steal every scene she's in).

So no showstopping regrets about this Blu-ray. Still baffles me why it's received such a hoo-hah rap.
I ordered mine, shipped out today. It really is a fantastic movie.

I don't think it will sell out too quick, a couple of months I think we will see it in stock. I will still be putting my pre-order in right away however.

It won't sell out in 8 hours like Christine, but it won't last longer than a week at the very most is my guess.

I won't be up for preorder for a couple weeks since the release date is July 23rd. It will probably go up on June 28th.

Ah yes, I was thinking it was releasing July 9 instead of July 23.

I presume today is the day for Sleepless in Seattle and Love is a Many Splendored Thing then based on their "25 days before" model.

Thanks Yojimbo

I suppose they're going to issue this in a brown paper bag or plastic sleeve since there's no artwork out yet. Nobody thinks this is strange?

No, TT just released the artwork for Sleepless in Seattle and Love is a Many-Splendored Thing on Monday (June 10) and those titles are released two weeks earlier than The Driver. My guess is that TT will release the cover art for it in the next week or so.

Probably, and for 5 bucks more you can get a limited to 3,000 copies of a 40 oz. of Michelob signed by Ryan O'Neal and Bruce Dern thrown into the brown paper bag.

I wonder if they have considered trying to release The Last American Hero ( 1973 )? A movie that has Jeff Bridges, Ned Beatty and Gary Busey in it and the title song by Jim Croce can't be all bad!

I have really been hoping for announcements of 3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER, GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER. I would have thought at least one of those would have been announced by now, especially since MYSTERIOUS ISLAND sold out.

I recently have found myself wondering which would be more profitable for them: separate releases of the two Sinbad films at $30 each, versus a 2-disc double bill of both films for $50? I would think the latter...

An uncut ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. from Fox would be awesome, as well!!

While I would love to see another scifi film announced soon, Iwas thinking that The Wind and the Lion with its Oscar and Grammy nominated film score by Jerry Goldsmith would make an interesting Twilight Time release. Also, Young Winston!

The Wind and the Lion is now owned by Warners in the US (it's a Columbia title in the rest of the world). Young Winston is a bit problematic - the DVD Sony released in Europe was the heavily cut version (124 minutes at 24fps) rather than the full 157-minute version which ended with a dream sequence where an elderly Churchill is visited by his disappointed father that was the best thing in the film. Sony did release a longer cut in Germany, but that DVD is also missing the final dream scene. Unless Sony have remastered the film in HD from the original cut, it would just disappoint fans of the film.
