The answer is no.
In the US I think 99% of displays can only do 60Hz. And most other countries in region A are 60Hz too (Altho I'm sure the display situation there is more flexible)

So even if the players sold in the US/Region A had 25/50 output enabled, which I don't think is the case for most players (maybe kjack can give us more info) most displays here wouldn't be able to accept it and the player would have to do the 25/50 -> 30/60 conversion (again maybe kjack could shed more light into this?)

The situation in PAL/50Hz countries (region B) is reversed, as far as I know multi standard TVs are common and HDTV displays are required to accept 50/60.

It's also worth mentioning that Planet Earth was apparently only shot in 720p, not 1080.

It was shot on various HD formats 720, 1080i, 1080p plus film, at various speeds.

And it was broadcast by the Beeb in AVC 19 Mb/s 1080i x 1440 according to sneals2000, a knowledgale bloke from the UK.
