Nissen's work prompted me to get into high gear a project that has been simmering on the back burner for sometime. I originally had planned not to post this but I'm posting it here more to explain my process than anything else.
All my James Bond 007 VHS movies followed this basic Warner template when I was growing up in the 1980s and living in the United Kingdom, so I have a nostalgic love for the design. The other Bond movies incorporated the United Artists logo such as: Moonraker: ![]() Dr. No: ![]() and The Spy Who Loved Me: ![]() But being outside the EON canon the movie "Never Say Never Again" did not sport the United Artists logo. ![]() So, since the design was one I had fond memories for (ahhh...the power of nostagia) I resolved to do a conversion to a Blu-ray case of the 1984 NSNA VHS design. One of the major difficulties with converting a VHS cover to a Blu-ray cover is that a VHS cover is significantly taller and thinner. As such its not just a simple matter of transporting material from one to another. On the backcover for example I typed out all the text and collected the highest resolution versions of the images I have in my collection. The image of the bouncer and Bond was faded to the point that it would look out of place so I had to make some color corrections. The top image of Bond and the horse needed some pen tool work. I had to figure out what font had been used for the text and after investigating and asking around, Nissen told me it was --- Arial (I guess in those days the choices were basic). After I had all the elements I built the separate pieces together using InDesign. InDesign as a publishing tool has a lot more functionality with text such as an easy drop cap application and column feature. The initial synoposis attempt took up the entire page so I had to go through several versions before I worked one that worked as I wanted (on the fourth attempt). Overall I am pleased with the progress. I just need to find a couple more elements and it will be ready: ![]() Last edited by DrrnHarr; 06-16-2013 at 11:16 PM. |

Ever cursed that SteelTongs or Universal Acc don't include more credit information. I discovered this video online that explains precisely how to create movie credits in Adobe Illustrator:

That's a great tutorial. I wish I had Illustrator. Does anyone know of a similar tutorial on text layout like this one for Photoshop CS4?
THANKS ![]() |

Tell me about it. I was pretty psyched to come across that training. One thing that always irked me with Universal acc and SteelTongs is that they are clearly geared towards the special effects heavy science fiction crowd (just look at some of the production roles they cover). But thats not always appropriate for some movies.
I have Illustrator on my home computer but it's the program I understand least, I've spent the last few hours tinkering around in it and its such a versatile tool. |

One of the hardest elements to find in this VHS to Blu-ray case conversion was the names of the companies that were part of the consortium that held the rights to the movie "Never Say Never Again" (one was a furniture store).
It was on the VHS original but I could not find a high res version of that image and the legal type was fuzzy. So it required some digging. I had originally not planned on distributing the high res jpeg but there has been some interest so if anyone would like this please PM me. Here's a low resolution preview: ![]() Last edited by DrrnHarr; 06-18-2013 at 01:04 AM. |

With the Scream Factory release of this last week, I decided to put together a retro style cover based of the VHS box art. Created completely from scratch, tried to stay true as close as I could to the original box art. The biggest difference is the stills on the back. I could not find HQ copies of the ones from the vhs, so these were used instead.
Pretty happy with it. Thoughts/comments? ![]() |
