Not to mention, very few discs offer both a theatrical AND a director's cut. Not even WB titles like Amadeus and Natural Born Killers. So it's kinda silly to either assume it would've been on there anyway, even if they had the rights to both.

For completists sake and to compare and contrast, why not include both cuts if possible? Look at the Brazil and Blade Runner sets - it would be great to see Nightbreed receive a similar deluxe treatment. I'm waiting until a specific distributor is announced before getting too excited or wondering about BD configurations though.

Cool news, but I'll believe it when it's in my hand.

I didn't think Morgan Creek had actually allowed anyone to go into their vaults to dig up the actual film elements. I'll believe it'll look worthy of a bd when reports come in though. I'm hopeful for an improvement, the actual theatrical version stinks and has always felt incomplete.

In a recent Q&A at a screening of the film, Russell has said that the restoration process for home video/DVD/blu-ray will be similar to that of "Alien 3." So, apparently I'm assuming this means that the completed director's cut they have been showing is in a sense completed but when it comes to releasing this to the market on video there will be one more clean up of the print to make it look a bit better.

Its going to take a lot of cleaning!!
The extra footage was found on vhs tapes in Clive Barkers storage .
At the screening I attended they were planning to release (hopefully!!) a three disc set with the Cabal cut, Nightbreed ( the cut that was released in cinemas) and a disc with a documentary on how the Cabal cut came about and its journey from the finding of the tapes, the edit process, the screenings with fans, the occupy midian website.
I hope it does get released this year as it deserves to be seen and I cant think of another film that has had such support for a original version to be seen ( i bet someone names another film now that has had the fans in strong support!!)

Does the Donner cut of Superman II count?

Would agree with that one.
Given that Hard Target was recently announced for release in Europe and Australia on Blu Ray I thought someone would of mentioned the workprint first.

ALIEN 3 wasn't "cleaned up" from a VHS copy of the workprint, though. They went back to the vaults and transferred the additional footage from the negative trims in HD. If that's what they're planning to do with CABAL, it will indeed be cause for celebration!

Hope this blu-ray is as good as Warner's other quality genre blu-rays like Little Shop of Horrors for example which had both cuts and quality extras as they finally knew how to care for fans of the genre with that one. Even King Kong and The Exorcist were quality blu-rays from them.

Superman II - The Richard Donnor Cut is exactly what I think and worry that this Nightbreed - The Cabal Cut will be like -- To me, that's interesting to view as an alternate possibility of what should or could have been, yet ultimately disappointing as a cohesive film watching experience.

This definitely needs both versions. Fans have wanted to see the full version, but in it's absence the film that they have grown to love is the theatrical. There is a place for them both. I'd love to retire my DVD for a set with both.

Russell Cherrington was on the Picking Brains Podcast, and while he remained non-committal about the Blu-ray release date of Nightbreed, he spill the beans on Blu-ray extras.

Extras include :

Commentary with Russell, Mark Miller and Clive Barker
Documentary on the making of Cabal cut
Video intrudaction of Clive Barker
Frightfest interview with Russell Cherrington & Mark Miller
Trailers
"Some Fangoria footage"
Interviews with Croneberg, Neil Gaiman

and more.

(he starts talking about blu-ray around 00.40)

just as long as is it doesn't feature a scene with slow motion tooth paste, I'll be happy...

Will it be fully film-sourced or still VHS-sourced?

VHS sourced. Cherrington mentions still (in the Podcast) that's all they got, those 2 VHS tapes, and that's all that exists of the UNCUT version.

Yeah it's kind of a bummer, but I'll still take it over nothing. Hopefully they do something akin to "My Bloody Valentine" in terms of choosing to view the film with or without the cut footage, but strangely there is no talk of the theatrical cut being included.

Then what's the point of a blu-ray release?

I don't completely know how it works, but essentially they would bake and transfer the tape. This supposedly would bring the image to DVD or near DVD quality. Obviously it still wouldn't be Blu-ray resolution, but it certainly would be better than VHS.
