The Cinemark Webb Chapel IMAX in Dallas will play Man of Steel in 2D once per day instead of only in 3D. They're finally giving customers a choice!

That's the best news ever!

Actually the best news ever would be "The former IMAX in Brisbane is going real IMAX again, and playing 3D films in 2D as well, and costing less than $30 a ticket", but that's still pretty close!

I'm sure a lot of people would be happy about that!

For those in the DMV area looking for 70mm IMAX, look no further than the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Air and Space Mueseum in Chantilly, VA. Not only did Michael Bay shoot at the museum for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, but the Airbus IMAX Theater is a fantastic venue, showing documentary films such as Hubble, Space Junk, Air Racers, and others, as well as Star Trek: Into Darkness. I have seen that, the Hubble, Legends of Flight, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and Skyfall at the museum. All were fantastic, with Star Trek, Mission Impossible, and Hubble being particularly amazing. They will likely be showing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in the fall, which was shot partially with IMAX cameras. Don't settle for digital IMAX, or "lie-max" at your local theater. The 6 story screen screen and majestic sound is far worth whatever drive you need to take to get there. This theater also prevents you from having to deal with the traffic around DC and walking to the National Mall (where the other Air and Space Museum is). Parking is free after 4pm, and movies are shown later into the night. The theater also just started offering food and beverages to take in to the movie, at prices better than the theater chains we have become accustomed to. The museum itself is incredible, and a day could easily be spent in it. (Go see Star Trek: Into Darkness there if you can, now! The picture and sound was incredible!)

looks like the Regal RPX 'Dolby Atmos' screens are debuting with 'Man of Steel'.

saw 'Fast and Furious 6' last Thursday over on the Xtreme screen at the Xscape theater in Brandywine Maryland - that was a 70ft screen ?? didn't look 'that' large. The 2.35 image was pushed up to the top of the screen, not nestled in the middle, like other specialty screens I've seen where the image has black borders above and below the 'film'. Unfortunately the lights from the stairs reflected back towards the screen - which ruined any scene that was supposed to be dark. The 5.1 soundmix of 'F&F6' really did not endorse or effectively use the 10.2 speaker system in my opinion.

give it or take it, Udvar Hazy IMAX setup is not able to present IMAX 3D features - it's only downfall in my opinion. That will change though when the IMAX-D (laser) conversion happens in 2014/2015.

I still like the National Mall Natural History museum's IMAX screen - it seems larger and the screen isn't as close to the seating as at Udvar Hazy. It unlike Udvar can playback in 3D

I wont get a sense til later of next week, but it looks like 'World War Z' might bump 'Monsters University' off of the specialty screens; which is too bad since 'Monsters' was actually mixed in Dolby Atmos. 'Z' is in standard 5.1

Was MOS mixed in Dolby Atmos, or was it converted? If it is converted, then there's no reason to watch it in Dolby Atmos.

huh? I'm not sure what you mean how you're interpreting mixed versus converted. Converting the 7.1 audio stems to Atmos would seem to me as being the same as mixing the sound elements. And why wouldn't it not be mixed, it's a brand new movie.

according to this article MOS is mixed:

Lol. Is this like the audio freak's 3D?

Native vs. converted. Native always wins...

Yeah, but then when you try to tell these people that movies originally presented in mono should always have the mono track available on home video, they say that 5.1 immersion is "better".

while the specialty screens have the upper hand in putting any movie on the uber large screens, I think and wish more studios would jump on the 7.1 audio bandwagon and give those systems the audio that supercedes what IMAX can't do - since they are locked into only 5.0 sound.

I don't know where you come up with this stuff.

Back when they were running the audio off the optical audio portion of a film strip, they probably were limited to 5.1 channels. However, in 15/70 venues, they're now able to run audio off of a synced digital signal that can have as many channels as technically feasible at this point. In Digital IMAX auditoriums, the movie is played from hard drives just like any other digital projector, so again, they're not limited to just 5.1 sound.

that maybe true, but show me an IMAX theater (15/70 or IMAX-D) that has surrounds on the back wall, along side the one's in the corner; on in the ceiling?

Since there is a height speaker above the center channel - the typical IMAX setup is comprised of six speakers - left, center, right, surround right, surround left, height center (bass is alloted to all the speakers, hence no separate subwoofer) - however the sound source is confined to this configurament. Whether a sound designer is using the 5.1 or 7.1 audio stems, he or she has to stay within the parameters of six speakers in an IMAX equipped auditorium.

Obviously the more speakers and whether it's 70mm 6-track sound (five front across sound) (and similarly 8-channel SDDS), 70mm 'baby boom' 6-track, 70mm split surround, Dolby/DTS EX/ES, 7.1, Barco 11.1, Dolby Atmos - the aspect of sound can differ considerably depending on how it's setup and is decoded.

The art of sound mixing/replication is the only area where theaters now a days can match if not supercede the audio aspect of the competing 'IMAX experience'

I don't know what IMAX theaters you're visiting, but you need to go to the Bob Bullock in Austin.
