Question Cheap Steelbooks

Just curious, why recent steelbooks release such as Watchmen, Braveheart, Batman, and so on are so freaking cheap?

The lack of inside artwork. A couple slipped through the cracks for whatever reason. These are fugaze for the most part. They're genuine Steelbook brand but half-assed.

That's my compulsive reaction to the.whole thing anyway.

Edit: I did grab Watchmen and Dark Knight so I'll admit that was cool.

They are all reissues of titles already on blu-ray. Some of them already had SteelBooks released earlier, and as another poster pointed out, they are made on a budget.

Most of these are simply re-releases of steelbooks that were released in Canada in 2009 and 2010. As pointed out above the glaring difference is the lack of internal artwork, which doesn't really bother me.

Is this supposed to be about "cheap" or "inexpensive" steelbooks? There is a significant difference between the two.

I figure the main draw of steels is the outer art, the inner art is just a bonus, and the cost of paying a premium for the initial releases isn't worth google-able images on the inside which will seldom be seen by most people, anyways. And if you're so inclined, you could take a crack at printing inner art yourself and placing it inside.

Wait a sec... So, the new Watchmen steelbook doesn't have inside artwork?? Damn, I just ordered it! Last time I checked, Batman and Batman Returns indeed don't have inside artwork. But, I thought Watchmen had it.

Personally I could care less if there is any artwork on the inside. It doesnt sit on my shelf open.

It has it. It's one of the few.

Inner artwork can also be manually added if the end consumer so chooses.

I have a whole bunch of images ready to prep for adding interior artwork. It's really easy popping the plastic off. I just need a working printer again, lol. Hopefully in July.

My whole take on these "cheap" steelbooks is that, as everyone has mentioned, these are re-issues. They are made from the same company as the "premiere" looking steelbooks.

I have a first print (release) of Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows and Wrath of the Titans 3D. Their finish is glossy with internal artwork and contains multiple discs (2 discs for each title). These re-issue steelbooks have a matte flat finish (not cheap IMO) and no inner art. Keep in mind that manufacturing errors in quality is to blame for Steelbooks to have paint chips and such. Personally, I was extremely surprised that Watchmen, Batman Begins and the Dark Knight came with inner artwork, since these are re-issued. From what I've seen online, it seems that the Watchmen first print from FS has a glossy finish where the current U.S. re-issue is a matte finish.

I also wanted to bring up once again what everyone here already have mentioned. It is because of these differences that allow retailers and studios to sell these steelbooks at a budget price. I have heard and seen personally scenarios where both Sherlock Holmes:GOS steelbooks (first prints and re-issues) were available at Best Buy, and the shinier, glossy first print of SH:GOS steelbook still costs $34.99. The BB employees know the differences (my guess is the SKU) and would not let the first print steelbook go for the $14.99 or $9.99 price.

I personally love the fact that these steelbooks are being re-issued because some of these steelbooks were previously unavailable in the U.S. Another bonus is that thanks to some of you guys, now there are ways to add custom artwork to the steelbook.

Even though most of us are collectors and would love to maintain the value and rarity of these steelbooks its always a nice option not to sell your kidneys in the black market to be to acquire a steelbook of your choice. Deep down I feel that these waves will one day be gone (just like any fad) and then perhaps some value can be restored to these steelbooks (but never at the same price as a first print SB)

So, sorry for my lenghty 2 cents, but I prefer to have the option to pick up these budget or "cheap" steelbooks. That way, I can enjoy collecting and see my movie collection grow. You can still find the first prints of most of these steelbooks in the secondary market but you have to be willing to pay the price. Just like any collection out there, If you can swing the cash for these first prints then you will find that these "cheap" steelbooks are not a problem whatsoever.

From the current WB steelbook wave at Walmart and Best Buy, these DO HAVE inside artwork

Yeah this wave was definitely great for a custom project but I just didn't even like some of the cover art. I even had some images lined up for Gladiator but decided to grab the UK digibook instead.
