That probably won't happen soon unfortunately, I watched it too today and the DNR is very noticeable, I didn't really notice the white line you mentioned though.

On the positive side, at least the original colour timing was retained for that release unlike the Extended Edition. It's more or less a pick your poison scenario with The Fellowship Of The Ring.

You have the Theatrical Cut Blu which is DNR'ed and Edge Enhanced but retains the original colour palette. Or you have the Extended Edition Blu which isn't DNR'ed and Edge Enhanced but has had the colour timing completely redone and for the most part not for the better.

The only bits that I prefer the colour timing in the Extended Edition is the Rivendell scenes. For the rest of the film I prefer the original colour timing. That green tint is frikin' annoying as hell.

If only there were a Blu-Ray release of both versions of the film where the Theatrical Cut is free from DNR and Edge Enhancement and the Extended Edition has had the films original colour timing left intact. Those transfers would look amazing if it ever happened.

That depends on if you're into steelbooks or not. I'm perfectly happy with my regular editions, but these steelbooks might go up in value in the future so that's something to think about.

One does not simply not watch LOTR. Do it do it now! lol.

If I were you I'd watch the Theatrical Cuts first to see if you like the films. If you do like them, you have to then watch the Extended Editions as they're the superior versions of the films and much closer to the books.

Just bought this at Costco last week for the bargain price of 16.99 and now our friends at Amazon have it for 12.96 !

I picked up 2 copies for my sons over the holidays for $6.96 each at Walmart. You may still find a few in the $7.88 bin there.

the newly packaged theatrical trilogy only came out January 14. So how did you get it "over the holidays"?

Hmm, it's the same packaging now pictured on Amazon. Must have been a Walmart exclusive until Jan 14.

One of the most disappointing purchases I have ever made. Mainly because the first film could look so much better. Obviously an old scan. You can tell by the lack of detail, the dnr, and the white line that comes and goes on the right side of the screen (if you have no overscan on your set.)

Does the Extended set have new extras from the DVDs or are they basically the same?
I really like the way the menu openings were done on the EE DVDs with the music etc, it really adds to the atmosphere, and the Appendicies docs are superb.

It has the Making of LOTR documentaries from Costa Botes. These were only available with the Limited edition flipper DVD's, but weren't properly formatted then.
