To the fellow looking for advice, you really can't go wrong with any of them. Removing sentiment from the equation, I'd say The Howling and Terror Train are a little better than the other two, but The Burning has terrific effects and TTTDS has... - policemen in drag on stake out - a trombone - Ben Johnson - the voice over to end all voice overs - tonal shifts that have to be experienced to be believed - Texarkana atmosphere - pseud-Peckinpah chases/shoot-outs ![]() |

The Howling for sure - easily the best film they've released so far - and Town (I actually thought The Evictors was the better film, but you get great value regardless). If you're a slasher fan though, The Burning and Terror Train are two of the better examples of the genre. If you don't care for slashers, you may find them tedious.

If you had An American Werewolf in London, or really any other werewolf films, in your collection, I'd probably place The Howling over Terror Train. TTDS is unique enough that I can't really say, "If you like such and such movie, then you'll probably like TTDS." The plot of the film is essentially Zodiac, but the tone in which that plot is delivered is very, very different, in the way that The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Saw essentially have the same plot, but in practice, couldn't be more different. As NoirFan indicated, the humor is often out of place and takes some getting used to. It has slasher-esque qualities to it, but to go in expecting a film like Halloween would be a mistake. I've never bought a Shout/Scream title but I want to get one or two. I've seen and own all of the major canonical horror movies (everything from early monster flicks, to Psycho and Peeping Tom, to Halloween, Friday, and Nightmare, to Scream). But no sequels (except Evil Dead 2, and the Romeros).
Anyways, I don't have any particular preference in terms of what sort of horror or schlock I'm looking for, but I wouldn't mind a couple of suggestions in terms of what are the two or three, simply the best Scream Factory releases in your opinions, the ones I should get to add to my collection? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. ![]() |

My top 3:
1. The Howling 2. They Live 3. Halloween III But people are just going to post their personal favorites anyway, so in ten posts or so every title they've released will be listed. Asking for recommendations on this forum won't really get you anywhere. ![]() |

If you love the horror genre in general just start from the beginning with the releases. Pick up "Halloween II" and "Halloween III" and so on. Personally, I collect all the "Collector's Edition" titles, but I skipped over "Terror Train" mainly due to it being a not that great, but not downright terrible film to me, and not enough extras included really didn't warrant a $20+ purchase for me. I'll probably skip over "Lifeforce" as well mainly because I'm not all that familiar with it and I don't see myself really digging it from what I've seen of it.

Seriously? No Evil Dead 2? It's way better than the first in some aspects. It is probably the best of the trilogy. EDIT: Sorry, misread. But no Halloween II (it allows for the story to be ended)? Last edited by demonknight; 06-20-2013 at 12:17 AM. |

Another vote for Tremors and *batteries not included. Where did you hear these rumblings, though?

Hi Cliff,
Have you considered licensing RAVENOUS (1999) for a Scream Factory Blu-ray release? I know the release year is a bit more contemporary than the films you usually release but it really feels more like a late 80s/early 90s film than late 90s. When Fox initially issued this on DVD in 1999 the transfer was non-anamorphic letterbox. They only re-issued the film once since then, in 2005 with a different cover but the same non-anamorphic transfer. A Blu-ray release would be a massive jump in quality and there are plenty of opportunities for great supplements. I think most people would be surprised at just how huge the cult following for this film is. There's a lot of demand and I think it would fit in nicely with the other films in the series. I don't think Fox will ever release it on Blu-ray themselves. |
