Absolutely a chick flick.

I've never been able to sit through the entire thing, and I was born in '64, so I was part of the target demographic during its' initial run. It just looked like a "big dumb jock club" type of film, and I have (pretty much) zero interest in anything Tom Cruise.

I'd really be more concerned about why you're so "sensitive."

The film is awesome if you are 14 years old, but as soon as you mature you realise that the only people the film appeals to are teenage girls and homosexuals. Nice action sequences during the dogfights, but the rest of the film comes across as something concocted by the likes of a barely-restrained Joel Schumacher.

Top Gun is a dude flick through and through. I saw it at the theater the summer before my freshman year in high school, and it was the best sales pitch for military service that I have ever seen in my life. I was on the football team back then, and we all had the Top Gun haircuts.

Good date movie, yes, but I wouldn't say that it's a chick flick. Fighter jets, explosions, Michael Ironside, "target rich environment", and all, so it works as a guy movie best of all.

Guy movie but there are a few scenes that take it to the edge of being a chick flick.

Dude movie all the way. Would have never watched this had it not been for my BF and even then I was in my late 20's...I guess I view chick flicks as the crying, rambling, tug at your heart strings superficial love crap. Yes, pretty narrow view but

Top Gun wouldn't be much of a recruitment film if it were made now.

Instead of Top Gun, it's drone school. Instead of beach volleyball, it's World of Warcraft. Instead of a bar, Jamba Juice or Starbucks.

the two aren't mutually exclusive. it's a guy movie that chicks dig or a chick flick that is safe for guys. it helped to set the stage for the wave of bromance pics of subsequent decades ("you can be my wing man") and at the same time created a new template for chick flicks to incorporate elements of action.

the movie clearly influenced Kathryn Bigelow - so that we could be asking the same question about Hurt Locker or Zero Dark Thirty. Not to say that these are at all 'chick flicks,' but you know what I mean . . . Top Gun helped to usher in a format of the bromantic action thriller that has wide appeal . . . and her oeuvre nicely combines elements that appeal to both men and women

asked my wife, she says def 'dude flick,' and she loves it. also her brother went into the air force because of that movie, wanting to fly planes and all . . . he wound up doing more grunt work on bases . . . anyways, i'd say dude flick after some more reflection.

I always took it as a guy flick that they could watch with their ladies without complaints.
