Does anyone know why the time for this version says that it is 94min in this site and 93min in Amazon.fr if the uncut version is supposed to be 89min (like the German uncut version; the cut German version is 87min)? (In imdb it also says that the time is 89min for the regular version)

![]() ![]() Maniac is to be released in two weeks in France, on 3rd July. It's not even a limited edition, this steelbook is the only way to get the film on Blu-ray — not that I'm complaining, quite the opposite ![]() And I think it's pretty awesome that they chose to include the soundtrack in the steelbook, because it is amazing. EDIT : Ah, apparently, amazon says there is another Blu-ray edition that's not a steelbook. But two weeks from release, no picture, same price as the steelbook (what's the point then?), doesn't come up until the second page when you type 'Maniac Blu-ray" in the search bar... it looks like they scrapped the plans to release a regular amaray, in my opinion, and that page will be taken down soon. I don't know why the filmmakers cast Elijah Wood in the leading role, as the psychopathic killer. It'll be very difficult for me to view this movie without seeing him as a hobbit. Elijah Wood look like he wouldn't hurt a fly, lest so trying to portraying a psychopath. Maybe another actor, who look menacing and demented will be more convincing to play a maniac, strictly not Elijah Wood.

I believe that's the point... Casting someone that people would never think could commit some of the acts portrayed on screen. For shock value.

No way. Joe Spinell who've starred in the original Maniac, looked deranged naturally. He was very convincing, as a psychopath. No only he acted the part, he looked it. That's why the original was good, and a horror classic is because, or it's realistic portrayal. Whoever miscast Frodo in this remake, really made a big mistake. If the filmmakers are unable to remake a movie, equivalent or surpass the original, then it should be left alone.

Speaking as someone who has actually seen both, and is a fan of the original, the new one is exceptionally better, although to be fair this new one takes its own path and it's honestly hard to compare the two. Wood's look is rarely a concern as 99% of the film is shot in the first person and you only really see him if he catches his reflection in a mirror or other reflective surface. That said, Wood fits the serial killer motif way more because they are nearly always regular looking guys that people rarely believe could commit such atrocities. I'd urge you to give it a chance, especially if you are a fan of the original. A few clever nods to the original are mixed in.
For those interested, here's my review as well. http://thehdroom.com/news/Maniac-201...n-Horror/12638 The movie is now available on demand if anyone wants to give it a look before taking the plunge and buying it. Be forewarned that it is not for the squeamish. |

Anyone get this? I wanted to know if the subtitles were removable but also Amazon fr customers seem to be saying there's no soundtrack cd with it. Anyone confirm details? Trying this here as well as the 'France' forum just to see if anyone knows.

All this talk about the soundtrack being awesome made me seek out some clips to listen to on youtube. Indeed it is quite hypnotic...like a mesmerizing 80's B-movie...in a very good way. I like how the piano echoing in it juxtaposed with the hard electronic edge....to me I think it will match very well with what Wood's inner killer instincts and outer appearance seems to be. One at odds with the other. Kinda hints at something like John Carpenter and Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark.
I'm even more intrigued to see the film now. If the price drops more on the region free UK version I will probably import. Last edited by RipleyLV426; 07-04-2013 at 06:22 PM. |
