Abdrewes,

Is Miami Vice really that good? I love Michael Mann and never got around to seeing it due to the negative critical response. Having just watched my Insider blu for the second time, I went ahead and blind bought Miami Vice on Amazon just now. BTW, I also love Collateral which I know has a similar visual style.

Watched Slacker today. I enjoyed it at first but after the first 40 min or so the shtick got old. IMO this should had been a short film not a 1hr 40min feature film. This is definitely a no for me.

I think it's that good. In fact, I think it's the purest expression of his art (and every bit as good as Thief, Heat & The Insider). Just think more Antonioni (art house) than Pakula (thriller).

I wrote an unwieldy and lengthy piece a few months back if you're interested (http://filmvice.blogspot.com/2013/04...world.html?m=0). I have seen both cuts multiple times (i revisited the theatrical cut last week), but still prefer the more languid Director's cut (which thankfully includes one of my favorite images and elaborates on the Sonny/Isabella relationship). It took me about 2 viewings to recognize it as a great film and now it's one of my absolute favorites.

Fingers crossed you like it.

Another vote for Miami Vice. First time I saw it, I was unconvinced as I had no idea what to expect. It's not what I was expecting at all. Second time around, I thought it was a masterpiece.

I've taken advantage of the Buy-Two-Get-One-Free deal a couple of times this month, but I had other coupons and such to lessen the cost so that it is comparable with the upcoming July sale.

The Amazon sale this month is just as beneficial as the Barnes & Noble July sale, though, and, in fact, the recent sale prices have been even better. I think that the Amazon titles are creeping back up right now, but it's worth a look.
Anyone know if the Criterion blu's are still $29.xx in store today? I saw a few days back on this thread, some folks got some good deals using the Buy 2 Get 2 Free deal combined with the $5.00 off of $50 coupon; if so, I'd go pick up maybe three of them today.

Absolutely. It is one of the titles that I am most looking forward to, and I will hopefully be picking it up during the BN sale.

Exactly. Which cut do you prefer by the way?

Michael Mann is hit or miss for me, but when he hits, he strikes gold. For example, Heat may very well be my favorite film of all time.

The Last of the Mohicans, Collateral, and The Insider are all great films, too.

However, every time a new Mann film comes out, I get pumped up thinking it may be as good as Heat. Public Enemies, while it was pretty good, could have been much better I thought. And when I saw Miami Vice in theaters, I thought it might be Mann's worst film yet. Maybe I need to give it another try? There was almost nothing memorable in that movie for me.

The blu is only the director's cut correct? In this case, I'm most likely going to have to like that version most for the time being.

Also, if I was gonna pick one of Mann's films that just doesn't do it for me, that would be Last of the Mohicans. I've watched it twice and can't see what the fuss is about.

I am also lukewarm towards Last of the Mohicans, but I am fairly certain it is because of my feelings about the book, and my uncertainty about the changes and how they affect the characters and how they develop.

Yes. The Theatrical Cut is much tighter, but I still like the DC more. Still need to hear Michael Mann's commentary.

Same here. Its a decent movie, but I am willing to give it yet another shot to convince me it is something more.

Bronx Bull, I hope you give it another chance. I think the images are incredible in the film. I am also very moved by the Sonny/Isabella relationship. That final shot brings me to tears every time.

The romantic scenes in Mohicans simply don't work and take me out of the film whenever they show up. The film also just doesn't seem fully fleshed out in any regard.

I believe those prices were online only. Also I think it was only buy 2 get 1 free unfortunately.

While we're talking about Michael Mann, I enjoyed Collateral, Heat, and The Last of the Mohicans. I was neutral towards Manhunter (I prefer Red Dragon 1000000x more), and I disliked Miami Vice and Public Enemies.

I haven't seen his other films, but that's just my take on them. I've attempted Miami Vice four times and three of those times I ended up falling asleep, and the other I ended up shutting off halfway through. I couldn't take it.
