I really wish both the Theatrical and Extended Editions were included together in one set spread over 2 discs. One for the Theatrical Cut and the other For the Extended Edition. I really hope they don't go the same route like with LOTR where they were in separate sets but I'm not holding my breath.

I've still not bought the film as I'm waiting for the Extended Edition. If it turns out to be an inferior cut, I'll just get the Theatrical Cut if I can find it for a decent price.

They will be separate sets. That's been their plan all along. It makes the most sense to please the widest group of people, and it makes commercial sense to boot.

Further, as I said above, if they released both cuts together, it would be 4 BDs for the 2D release and 8 (!!!) BDs for the 3D + 2D release together. That would be expensive for the consumer and likely drive down sales.

This is my plan too. Find out whether the extended edition is great or poor, then pounce on the edition I want.

If the Extended Edition turns out to be good I'll pick up the Theatrical Cut at some point too as that was the version I saw in cinemas with friends which was a blast. Not to mention I'm one of those people that likes to own all the different cuts of films.

Probably because anyone can add to the database. So whoever added thinks both cuts will be included.

I guess there won't be a 2D only extended? If not then I guess I'll just sell off the 3D since I have no use for it.

The Hobbit - Info on Extended Scenes
Empire Delivers Details of 3 Scenes (Spoilers!)

[Show spoiler]As was confirmed a few days ago, The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey will be prolonged for the home video releases. 20-25 additional minutes will extend the runtime of the first film of the trilogy beyond the 3-hour mark. The film magazine Empire held some interviews with cast & crew and got some details regarding the content of some of the additional footage that we'll get to see in the already finished Extended Cut.

Information could be gathered for 3 scenes:

Gandalf meets Bilbo when he is still a child. Gandalf shows some magic tricks (e.g. a magic dragon) and Bilbo seems to like that very much. This scene should help to understand better why Gandalf chooses Bildbo for the journey. The theatrical cut shows shortly that Bilbo and Gandalf must know each other from earlier times and Bilbo doesn't quite recall that but it isn't shown in the form of a flashback.
The dwarves, who reluctantly entered Rivendell, will apparently have a new scene where they anger the elves with their rude behavior.
Furthermore, there will be additional moments with the white ork, the main villain of the heroes. Jackson stated that these were mainly cut because of runtime issues.
It remains to be seen if the release strategy is the same is it was with the Lord of the Rings movies, where the Extended Cuts came several months after the theatrical versions hit the shelves. Considering the fact that the longer version of the first Hobbit film is already completed, we'll have to wait what Warner Bros. plans. It could be early 2013 or shortly before the 2nd film starts in theaters. If they are fan-friendly, they won't try to milk them twice.
Don't know if this was posted yet? But who cares.

Not sure I'll get this. I found the movie to be a little to long already.

I find my sense of the length of a film is more related to how well it flows and how deeply it engages me, than the actual running time. So there are several films — Dances With Wolves and Kingdom of Heaven leap to mind — where the longer cuts actually seem subjectively shorter. I'm hoping that's how the EE of AUJ will be.

YMMV.

I'm assuming they'll announce the release date in July; all we know so far is that it's being released around the holidays.

All I want is a commentary. I thought the extra features on the Hobbit Theatrical disk were actually pretty good.

I don't own this yet so I'm torn between the inevitable Extended and the Theatrical. I really enjoyed the movie in theaters.

Anyone know if it will include the theatrical version as well?

I don't think it will. That would be too many discs.

It would be highly unusual for the Extended release to include the theatrical version of the film. I don't believe any of The Lord of the Rings extended edition releases contained the theatrical editions of their respective films.

In addition, the sheer number of discs required to release both editions together would set the average consumer back quite a bit. Eight discs would be required to fit the extended and theatrical versions of The Hobbit: AUJ in a single 3D release, which would likely require an MSRP of $50+ with street price at release being $40 or more. This would turn a lot of customers away, I think.

It's possible, BUT the listing on the site was added by someone maybe with no knowledge of the release. We won't know for sure until there's an official announcement.

That's why it's wise to take non-released/announced listings with a grain of salt.

I really wish people wouldn't do that. Happens all the time with non-US versions, where as soon as it's confirmed there'll be a release, people rush to create database entries — just so they'll be the first, it seems, whether they're right ror not. They end up creating duplicates, or assuming details based on existing releases, and are often wrong — it just confuses everyone and essentially ends up spreading misinformation. It's really crazy.

/rant.
