Default Yes "Close to the Edge" reissue, with new stereo and 5.1 mixes by Steven Wilson!

http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/foru...e7df1cb62bc439 ... in-October

Quote:
I have just been told it is okay to tell you all about this at long last - so here goes.

Featuring brand-new stereo & 5.1 mixes by Steven Wilson as well as some additional bonus material and the original stereo mix in glorious high resolution, "Close to the Edge" will be released in October this year. I cannot say too much more at this point in time, but will update this thread as & when I am able to do so.
This has been a very long time in the making, but well worth the wait - the new mixes sound absolutely glorious!

Wow, my interest just greatly piqued! He's doing instrumentals of the stereo tracks just like the XTC disc, very cool that they're doing a vinyl needledrop of an original UK A1/B1, dude is probably my fave guy in the music industry right now.

I just wish he'd suddenly decide he wanted to do all the Dave Matthews Band and The Verve deluxe editions, then I'd be over the moon.

Would love to hear him do Oasis' Definitely Maybe too, a nice, open, dynamic 5.1 mix would be brill.

Yes indeed. Am so happy to see this coming out... (I'm so glad I wasn't quite whelmed enough to check out the 2ch SACD. I really need a good reason to rebuy any music any more, and this is one of those good reasons.)

Apparently this blu-ray will include a bonus track of "America" in stereo high res and new 5.1 mix.

the original album mix and America in a DTS-HD Master Audio flat transfers from the original master tape source. (24bit/192khz)

Very cool! The needle drop sounds awesome too, and of course the 5.1 mix.

I love Steven Wilson with all my heart.

Imagine if ALL music releases were done like this?

IKR
Imagine if Universal put this much- even half this much effort into their HFPA releases; we'd really have something. I'm just glad SW is out there setting the standard- and doing it w/ YES!- maybe someday the big co.'s will get a clue (not holding my breath). Such quality product at such reasonable prices- imagine that! Keep showin em how its done, Steve.

(I hope this Yes release outsells any single HFPA release- worldwide)

Picked this up yesterday. The Blu ray/CD pack. Haven't had a chance to listen to it all yet, but I did have a quick spin of the LPCM 5.1 and all I can say is wow! The clarity is incredible. I will post more thoughts after I listen to the whole thing.

Mine came in from Burning Shed a couple of days ago but I haven't had time to open it yet. Will definitely be cranking up the Blu Ray disc this weekend. I'm already looking forward to the next release which I'm hoping will be The Yes Album.

So where's your impressions guys?

Here's mine:

The short version: in a word- Awesome!

The increase in detail and clarity is incredible. The vocals esp. benefit. Anderson's celestial voice is clear and strong, anchored to the center, except when his overdubs are placed in the surrounds, making for a 3 part harmony by himself! But when the 3 part harmonies w/ he, Howe and Squire kick in, the effect is simply gorgeous.

The soundscape is wonderful: fully immersive; stable yet w/ fluidity within it; and very evocative (I imagine myself within a cathedral w/ a rounded spire that the music reaches up to during "I get up I get down." It's not a real aggressive mix (I felt there was more movement up and down than back-and-forth or side-to-side), but very satisfying. I would have liked to see a little more adventuresome attitude w/ the mix, but that is a small caveat- bottom line, this mix places you firmly within this powerful, dynamic music.

I've read some complaints about the balance being off and the mix sometimes lacking punch; I don't agree, but can see why some might feel that way. Firstly, this mix has immense dynamic range (I've read reports of 13-14), so it needs to be played LOUD. I have to set the volume higher on this than any other DVD-a I have (though SW's ELP mixes are close). Secondly, I think mixing choices that gave all the many layers room to breathe and come out fully have altered the balance from the original somewhat, but I agree w/ this compromise- you can hear more of what is going on, but sometimes individual instruments lose some of their dominance. Even though it changes the feel somewhat at times, it still stays true to the original in principle and what is added more than makes up for any change. I did find the bass a little less powerful in places than I would have expected, but it is still strong, clear and with nice rounded tones.

I've been listening to this album for close to 40 years and it was almost like experiencing it for the first time again- which is saying a lot, b/c my 1st listen of this album blew my mind and altered my understanding of what music could be.

If you're a surround music fan- get this, you won't be disappointed. If you're a fan of the album, this is a no-brainer.

The extras are many and cool. America in 5.1 is the best; this mix is as good as the album. I won't comment on the 96/24 stereo versions, as I just sampled them; the 5.1 mix is the only one I'll listen to at home from now on- to me, it's now the definitive version of this landmark album.

I'm so glad they did this one 1st- pure musical nirvana. But I'm really anxious to see what SW will do w/ the other Yes albums, esp. Tales and Relayer.

CTTE is a fantastic sounding disc. I also thought the mix wasn't very aggressive. Tasteful would be the description I would use. The album has never sounded better. The whole package is nice. Great liner notes, the disc menus are well done and the content is pretty comprehensive. Very much worth the cost of admission for me.

"Tasteful"- nicely put. Though I might add "tasty" as well.
