I find it oddly hilarious that anyone in China would even be interested in steelbooks, given how rampant piracy is. It would be like buying premium bottled water when your family runs a water bottling factory. Wouldn't be surprised if this was an expat operation.

It's the "rate" of piracy that's different. Hardly anyone "collects" packaged digital media in China. There's little to no value assigned to anything software related. Just finding a store that sells blu-rays is a chore even in cities with over 10 million people. I've been in the country enough to know that.

Was just in Beijing earlier in the month and found 3 blu-ray stores without really trying too hard. All of them seemed to be bootleg stores, of course, but the prices and the quality varied. I couldn't find any legitimate blu-ray sales. The bootlegs looked good for the most part, though.
Malaysia's the only other country I've been to with that kind of blatant piracy out in the open (in department stores, no less). I don't quite understand these exclusive blufans steelbooks though. Who's making them? Is it just a case of these guys (blufans themselves?) having distribution rights and contracting a steelbook for production? It's probably been discussed elsewhere... |
