How about Gold Rush vs Safety Last?

Both blind buys for me. Never seen a silent film.

Modern Times. It's more visually inventive. (The feeder)

I think Modern Times will be easier for me to enjoy. The stills provided on amazon look much more like something I'll enjoy.

I'll end up buying both probably.

I haven't seen Safety Last! yet, but you are in for a treat with a silent film.

I like Gold Rush, but it's a film I don't revisit much.

My uncut opinion: the Buster Keaton short film collection is where to go for silent comedy on BluRay.

It wasn't BAD, but it was just a bit overhyped and not what I expected.

I'm a big supporter of Chaplin, though, and I find all of the work that I've seen thus far to be fantastic.

I haven't seen it, and I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying you appear to be in the minority on that film.

Worth noting when weighing up your opinion.

I'll do some more deciding on which silent film to get. For the B&N sale i've got:

Silent film
Brazil
Antichrist
Double Life of Veronique (have to watch Three Colors to get a feel if I want this or not).
+1 more

Only allowing myself $100 or so to spend.

I love Buster Keaton more than Chaplin, whom sometimes lays the shmaltz too thick for me.

I'm trying to put a list of titles for the upcoming B&N sale. I have some definite buys (Wild Strawberries, The Life of Oharu, Safety Last and Marketa Lazarova) but I need help with some potential purchases. What do you think of Cronos and Howards End?

Those two titles are not that popular around here, but they are both pretty good. If you're a fan of Merchant/Ivory, do buy Howard's End. It's simultaneously gorgeous and intimate.

Note: watch it ASAP, the copy I got wouldn't play ten minutes towards the end. I had to call CC for replacing.

Thanks, I'm intrigued by Cronos because I'm also buying The Devil's Backbone. I like Del Toro and Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite films but I haven't seen Cronos and I want an opinion on it. Howards End on the other hand is more because I like the cast but I've never seen anything from Merchant/Ivory. I do like British dramas though and I'm a fan of Downton Abbey LOL.

Yeah, I think Cronos is an extraordinarily well shot horror film. There are also big dollops of religious symbolism. If the idea of the twisted pursuit of immortality is interesting to you, go for it.

I agree. Both movies are great but I prefer Modern Times, is more enjoyable and re-watchable IMO.

Mine too Abdrewes! Well, to be fair it just arrived last week but I chose to see On the Waterfront and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp before Verdoux and both movies blown me away. I guess I'll watch Verdoux sometime this week.

Briefly Responded to your Cronos question above.

How did 'Blimp look? The last time I saw it was on TCM HD, and even them i was blown away. Powell/Pressburger really had a knack for color and framing.
